Question
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh.
May Allah protect you and your
family, dear Sheikh. May Allah also bless your children and grant that one of
them will continue the good work and assistance you provide to us.
My question is: I am the person who falsely claimed to have seen Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream. What is the ruling concerning what I have done? Can I repent and obtain Allah's forgiveness? May Allah grant you the ability to answer.
Answer
Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi
wa Barakatuh.
Falsely claiming to have seen
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream is a serious sin
in Islam. The Prophet explicitly warned against inventing dreams and
attributing experiences to oneself that one never had.
1.
The Seriousness of Fabricating a Dream
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and
blessings be upon him) warned that falsely claiming to have seen something in a
dream is among the gravest forms of lying.
He said:
“Among the worst of lies is for a
person to claim that his eyes have seen something that they have not seen.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
In another authentic narration, the
Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the punishment of a person
who falsely claims to have seen a dream: on the Day of Resurrection, that
person will be commanded to tie two grains of barley together, but will never
be able to do so.
This warning demonstrates the
seriousness of fabricating dreams and presenting them as genuine experiences.
2.
What If the Fabricated Dream Concerns the Prophet Muhammad?
The matter becomes particularly
serious when someone falsely claims to have seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace
and blessings be upon him).
The Prophet said:
“Whoever lies about me deliberately,
let him take his seat in the Fire.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
The Prophet also said:
“Whoever sees me in a dream has
indeed seen me, for Satan cannot take my form.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
These narrations show the importance
of respecting the Prophet and never attributing false statements or experiences
to him.
A person who invents a dream about
seeing the Prophet has committed a serious act of lying. Such conduct must not
be taken lightly, particularly if the fabricated dream is used to influence
others, gain admiration, or attribute messages to the Prophet that he never
conveyed.
Allah, the Most High, says:
إِنَّمَا
يَفْتَرِي الْكَذِبَ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَأُولَٰئِكَ
هُمُ الْكَاذِبُونَ
“Only those who do not believe in
the signs of Allah fabricate falsehood, and it is they who are the liars.”
— Qur'an 16:105
The Prophet (peace and blessings be
upon him) also warned against lying generally. He said:
“Beware of lying, for lying leads to
wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A person continues to tell lies
until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
3.
Can Someone Who Has Done This Repent?
Yes. The person can repent, and
should never despair of Allah's mercy.
No matter how serious a sin may be,
the door of sincere repentance remains open while a person is alive and has not
reached the point when repentance is no longer accepted.
Allah, the Most High, says:
“Say, ‘O My servants who have
transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of
Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving,
the Merciful.’”
— Qur'an 39:53
The person who fabricated the dream
should take the following steps:
1. Sincere regret
The person must genuinely regret
having invented the dream and recognise the seriousness of the wrongdoing.
2. Stop the false claim immediately
They must stop repeating the
fabricated story and must never again claim to have experienced something they
did not experience.
3. Make a firm commitment not to
repeat it
They should sincerely resolve never
to fabricate dreams or attribute false statements and experiences to the
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
4. Correct the misinformation
If the person has already told
others about the fabricated dream, they should correct the false information
and make it clear to those who were misled that the claim was untrue. This is
particularly important if people have believed the story, spread it, or acted
upon it.
5. Increase good deeds and seek
Allah's forgiveness
The person should frequently seek
Allah's forgiveness, perform righteous deeds, give charity, and remain
committed to obedience to Allah.
4.
A Word of Advice to the Person Concerned
You have acknowledged your mistake
and are asking whether you can repent. This is an opportunity to return
sincerely to Allah.
Do not allow the seriousness of your
sin to make you lose hope in His mercy. Instead, repent sincerely, correct the
falsehood you have spread, and resolve never to repeat it.
We also remind everyone who comes
across stories or messages attributed to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings
be upon him) not to circulate them without verifying their authenticity.
Fabricating statements or experiences and attributing them to the Prophet is a
serious matter.
Conclusion
Falsely claiming to have seen
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream is a grave sin
because it involves fabricating an experience and potentially misleading others
about the Prophet.
However, the person can repent.
They should sincerely regret the act, stop the false claim, resolve never to
repeat it, correct the misinformation they have spread, and seek Allah's
forgiveness.
Allah is Most Merciful and accepts
the sincere repentance of His servants.
