Assalamu Alaikum, Mallam. I have a question: If a man has more than one wife in this world, who will be his wife in Jannah? Also, if a man’s first wife passes away and he later remarries, then in the Hereafter, who will be his wife—the first wife or the second wife? If a woman marries more than one husband, which one will she be with in Paradise?

Wa alaikumussalam
warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Brothers/Sisters,
matters of Jannah are part of the unseen knowledge, and ultimately Allah knows
best exactly how every relationship will be in the Hereafter. However, Islamic
scholars have discussed these questions based on various narrations:
1. That she will be
with the one who was best in character and conduct with her in this world;
2. That she will
choose between them;
3. That she will be
with the last of her husbands.
The best and most
correct of these views is the third one, concerning which there is a hadeeth
attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (marfoo’):
“Any woman whose husband dies and she marries someone else after him, she will be
with the last of her husbands.” This was classed as saheeh by Al-Albaani (may
Allah have mercy on him) in Saheeh Al-Jaami’, 2704, and in Al-Silsilah
al-Saheehah, 1281.
Imaam al-Tabaraani
said: 3130 Bakr told us, he said, Muhammad ibn Abi’l-Sirri al-‘Asqallaani told
us, he said, al-Waleed ibn Muslim told us, he said, Abu Bakr ibn ‘Abd-Allah ibn
Abi Maryam told us, from ‘Atiyah ibn Qays al-Kilaa’i who said: Mu’aawiyah ibn
Abi Sufyaan proposed marriage to Umm al-Darda’ after Abu’l-Darda’ had passed
away. Umm al-Darda’ said: I heard Abu’l-Darda’ say: I heard the Messenger of
Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: any woman whose husband
dies and she marries someone else after him, she will be with the last of her
husbands, and I would not choose you over Abu’l-Darda’. So Mu’aawiyah wrote to
her (saying), you have to fast, for it is a protection (al-Mu’jam al-Awsat,
3/275).
Al-Bayhaqi said:
Muhammad ibn ‘Abd-Allah al-Haafiz informed us, Abu’l-‘Abbaas Muhammad ibn
Ya’qoob told us, Yahyaa ibn Abi Taalib told us, Ishaaq ibn Abi Taalib told us,
Ishaaq ibn Mansoor told us, ‘Eesaa ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Sulami told us, from
Abu Ishaaq from Silah from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he
said to his wife, “If you want to be my wife in Paradise, do not marry anyone
after I die, for in Paradise a woman will be with the last of her husbands in
this world. This is why Allah forbade the wives of the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) to marry anyone after he died, because they
will be his wives in Paradise.” (al-Sunan, 7/69).
As for a man who had
multiple wives in this world and all of them enter Jannah, he will be with all
of them in Jannah (Paradise) alongside the Hoor al-Ayn (pure companions of
Paradise). If a man's first wife passes away (or is divorced) and he remarries,
and if he and both wives enter Jannah, both wives can belong to him in
Paradise.
Righteous spouses who
both enter Paradise are reunited together by the grace of Allah (Quran 13:23,
36:56, 43:70). If one spouse attains a higher rank or level in Paradise than
the other, Allah may elevate the lower-ranking spouse to join their family members
at the higher level without diminishing their reward.
No one remains single
in Jannah; those who were unmarried in this life will be paired with a heavenly
spouse or someone they love.
Allah will remove any
jealousy, sadness, or hard feelings from their hearts, granting complete peace
and happiness to everyone. Allah is fully capable of granting complete
happiness, peace, and satisfaction to everyone without jealousy, sadness, or
injustice. Allah says in the Qur'an: “We will remove whatever is in their
hearts of resentment” (7:43). The emotions and limitations of dunya will not
exist in the same painful way in Jannah.
More importantly, our
main focus should not only be who will be with whom in Jannah, but rather how
to reach Jannah itself. The greatest success is entering Paradise and earning
the pleasure of Allah. Relationships in Jannah will be more beautiful, pure,
and peaceful than anything we can imagine in this world. There will be no
insecurity, heartbreak, or emotional pain there. So instead of overthinking
unseen details, focus on righteous deeds, sincere worship, good character,
justice in relationships, and closeness to Allah.
If Allah grants a
person Jannah, then He will also grant complete happiness and satisfaction
beyond human imagination. Allah’s decisions are always based on perfect wisdom,
mercy, and justice.
May Allah grant us
righteous deeds, beautiful character, loving relationships in this world, and
reunion with our loved ones in Jannah under His mercy and pleasure. Ameen 🤲
