QUESTION ❓
What is the ruling on a person who performs a prayer and, after completing it, discovers that he was not facing the Qiblah?
ANSWER
❗️
Wa Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh.
Facing the Qiblah is an
essential requirement of prayer for a person who is able to do so. Allah says:
Qad narā taqalluba wajhika fī
al-samā’i falanuwalliyannaka qiblatan tarḍāhā, fa-wallī wajhaka shaṭra
al-Masjidi al-Ḥarām, wa ḥaythu mā kuntum fa-wallū wujūhakum shaṭrah.
“We certainly see you turning your
face toward the heaven. So We will surely turn you to a direction of prayer
that will please you. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And wherever
you are, turn your faces toward it.”
— Qur’an 2:144
The Prophet ﷺ also instructed a man who was learning how to pray:
ثُمَّ
اسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ فَكَبِّرْ
Thumma istaqbil al-qiblata fakabbir.
“Then face the Qiblah and say
takbīr.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6667
However, the ruling depends on why
the person was facing the wrong direction.
1.
If the Person Deliberately Faced the Wrong Direction
If someone knows the direction of
the Qiblah, is able to face it, but deliberately chooses another direction
without a valid excuse, the prayer is invalid because he has knowingly failed
to fulfil an essential requirement of the prayer.
He must repent and repeat the
prayer.
2.
If the Person Made a Genuine Effort but Made an Honest Mistake
This is an important distinction.
If a person is somewhere where the
Qiblah is not obvious, and he genuinely tries to determine its direction—for
example, by asking someone knowledgeable, using reliable signs or an
appropriate means of determining the direction—and then prays according to the
best of his judgment, but later discovers that he was mistaken, there is a
well-known scholarly position that his prayer remains valid and he does not
have to repeat it.
This is supported by the incident
involving the Companions who prayed during a journey and later discovered that
they had not faced the Qiblah accurately. The Prophet ﷺ
did not command them to repeat the prayer.
The principle is that a person is
required to do what he reasonably can when the correct direction is unknown.
3.
If the Person Made No Effort to Determine the Qiblah
The situation is different if the
person could reasonably have determined the Qiblah but simply did not bother to
ask, investigate or make a reasonable effort.
For example, someone arrives in an
unfamiliar town where he does not know the Qiblah, but there are people whom he
could ask and reliable means of finding the direction, yet he makes no attempt
and simply chooses a direction.
In such a case, he has been
negligent.
Therefore, if he later discovers
that he prayed in the wrong direction, he should repeat the prayer.
The principle is that ignorance
alone does not excuse a person who could reasonably have removed that ignorance
before praying.
4.
What If the Person Realised During the Prayer?
If a person discovers while praying
that he has been facing the wrong direction, he should turn toward the Qiblah
if he is able to do so and continue the prayer.
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ did this when they received information
concerning the change of the Qiblah.
This demonstrates that discovering
the mistake during the prayer does not necessarily mean that the entire prayer
must be abandoned.
5.
What If the Person Truly Cannot Determine the Qiblah?
Allah does not burden a person
beyond his ability:
لَا
يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
Lā yukallifu Allāhu nafsan illā
wusʿahā.
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond
what it can bear.”
— Qur’an 2:286
Therefore, a person who genuinely
cannot determine the Qiblah should make a reasonable effort and pray according
to the direction he believes is most likely to be correct.
If he later discovers that he was
mistaken despite having made a genuine effort, he is not treated in the same
way as someone who was negligent.
Conclusion
The important distinction is between
deliberate negligence and an honest mistake after reasonable effort.
- If a person deliberately faces a direction other than
the Qiblah despite being able to face it, the prayer is invalid.
- If he could have determined the Qiblah but made no
reasonable effort, and later discovers his mistake, he should repeat the
prayer.
- If he genuinely tried to determine the Qiblah but was
mistaken, the stronger position is that he does not have to repeat
the prayer after discovering the mistake.
- If he discovers the mistake during the prayer, he
should turn toward the Qiblah and continue, provided he is able to do so.
Therefore, it is not correct to say
categorically that everyone who discovers after prayer that he was not
facing the Qiblah must repeat the prayer. The circumstances in which the
mistake occurred are important.
