Supplications and Islamic Protection from Sihr When Marital Conflict Is Frequent

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

A woman asks:

“Please, I am seeking Islamic guidance concerning the supplications taught in the Sunnah for protection from sihr (magic) or the influence of jinn. A person constantly experiences disagreements with her husband, and it is difficult for them to spend even one week peacefully without arguing. The situation has become so serious that they are beginning to worry about their relationship, and the husband has started developing strong dislike towards her. May Allah guide us to what is right.”

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

May Allah bring peace, affection and mercy between the couple and protect them from every form of harm.

The first thing to understand is that frequent disagreement between a husband and wife should not automatically be attributed to sihr (magic) or jinn. Marital conflict can arise from many ordinary causes, including poor communication, financial pressure, exhaustion, misunderstanding, unresolved disagreements, family interference, personality differences, or accumulated resentment.

Islam does affirm the existence of sihr and teaches Muslims to seek Allah's protection from it. However, there is no sound basis for declaring that a particular marriage is affected by magic simply because the spouses argue frequently or because one spouse begins to dislike the other.

Therefore, the couple should combine legitimate Islamic protection and supplication with practical efforts to identify and resolve the causes of their disagreement.

1. Seek Allah's Protection Through Legitimate Ruqyah

The Qur'an itself is a source of healing. Allah says:

Wa nunazzilu mina al-Qur'āni mā huwa shifā'un wa raḥmatun lil-mu'minīn.

“And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.”
— Qur'an 17:82

Among the established practices is reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah as ruqyah. The Companions recited it over a person who had been stung, and the Prophet ﷺ approved what they had done.

— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5736; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2201

Thus, a person may recite al-Fātiḥah and other established Qur'anic passages while asking Allah alone for protection and healing.

2. Recite Āyat al-Kursī and the Last Three Sūrahs

Āyat al-Kursī (Qur'an 2:255) is among the Qur'anic verses recommended for protection, particularly before sleeping.

The Prophet ﷺ also used to recite Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, Sūrat al-Falaq and Sūrat al-Nās, blow lightly into his hands and wipe them over his body before sleeping.

— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5017

These are authentic practices and do not require a person to believe that he or she has definitely been affected by magic.

3. A Supplication for Protection

The Prophet ﷺ taught:

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti Allāhi al-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2709

This may be used as part of one's regular supplications for protection.

4. Recite Sūrat al-Baqarah in the Home

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Inna al-shayṭāna yanfiru mina al-bayti alladhī tuqra'u fīhi Sūrat al-Baqarah.

“Indeed, Satan flees from the house in which Sūrat al-Baqarah is recited.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 780

The family can therefore make Qur'an recitation part of the life of the household.

5. Avoid Fortune-Tellers, Magicians and Amulet Sellers

A person experiencing marital difficulties should not go to fortune-tellers, soothsayers, magicians or people who claim to identify hidden enemies or jinn through unexplained methods.

Likewise, Muslims should avoid amulets and charms whose contents or methods are unknown or which are believed to possess independent protective power.

Protection should be sought from Allah, using the Qur'an and authentic supplications taught in Islam.

6. Do Not Diagnose Sihr From Ordinary Marital Problems

This point is particularly important.

A couple who frequently argue should not conclude:

“Someone has bewitched us.”

Nor should they begin accusing relatives, neighbours or other people of having performed magic without evidence.

Doing so can create suspicion and make an already difficult marriage even worse.

Instead, the couple should honestly examine questions such as:

  • What usually causes their arguments?
  • Are there unresolved financial or family issues?
  • Is there a problem with communication?
  • Are there repeated accusations or misunderstandings?
  • Is either spouse experiencing excessive stress or emotional difficulties?
  • Is there interference from relatives?
  • Has either spouse behaved in a way that has damaged trust?

Islamic ruqyah does not replace these practical steps.

7. Seek Reconciliation Through Trusted Mediators

When marital conflict becomes serious, Allah gives specific guidance:

Wa in khiftum shiqāqa baynihimā fabʿathū ḥakaman min ahlihi wa ḥakaman min ahlihā, in yurīdā iṣlāḥan yuwaffiqillāhu baynahumā.

“If you fear a breach between them, appoint one mediator from his family and one mediator from her family. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them.”
— Qur'an 4:35

This is particularly relevant when the disagreements have become frequent and the relationship is deteriorating.

8. Remember That Marriage Is Meant to Contain Affection and Mercy

Allah describes marriage as a relationship in which spouses find tranquillity, affection and mercy:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً

Wa min āyātihi an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwājan litaskunū ilayhā wa jaʿala baynakum mawaddatan wa raḥmah.

“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.”
— Qur'an 30:21

Therefore, both spouses should work toward restoring respectful communication, forgiveness and mercy.

Conclusion

There is nothing wrong with seeking Allah's protection through Qur'an, authentic ruqyah and established supplications when a person fears sihr or other harm. However, constant marital disagreement by itself is not proof of magic or jinn influence.

The couple should therefore combine worship and supplication with practical reconciliation: identifying the causes of their disagreements, avoiding suspicion and accusations, improving communication, and involving trustworthy family mediators or qualified counsellors when necessary.

May Allah remove whatever hardship exists between them, restore affection and mercy, and protect them from every form of evil.
