QUESTION ❓
Assalamu
Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, Sheikh.
I have developed a
painful pimple on my forehead. Whenever I perform sujud (prostration) during
salah, I experience severe pain and find myself eager to raise my head because
of the discomfort.
Please, what should I do when performing sujud in this situation? May Allah grant you good health and reward you abundantly.
ANSWER
❗️
Wa Alaikumus Salam
wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
All praise is due
to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and
blessings be upon him).
Dear sister, Islam
recognises that people may experience illness, pain, and physical difficulties
while performing acts of worship. A Muslim is required to worship Allah
according to their ability and is not required to cause themselves harm.
1.
What Should You Do If Sujud Causes Severe Pain?
If placing your
forehead on the ground causes severe pain or is likely to worsen the condition,
you should not force yourself to prostrate in a way that causes harm.
Instead, perform
your salah according to your ability. If you can place another part of your
face on the ground without causing harm, you may do so according to the
relevant scholarly guidance. If you cannot prostrate normally without
significant pain or risk of further injury, you may indicate sujud by lowering
your head.
When using
gestures, make the gesture for sujud lower than the gesture for ruku' (bowing).
The important
point is that you should not deliberately worsen your condition merely to place
your forehead on the ground.
2.
What Is the Islamic Evidence for This Concession?
Allah says in the
Qur'an:
Arabic:
لَا
يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
Transliteration:
Lā yukallifu
Allāhu nafsan illā wusʿahā.
English
translation:
“Allah does not
burden a soul beyond that it can bear.”
Reference: Qur'an 2:286.
This verse
establishes the general principle that Allah does not burden a person beyond
their capacity. Islamic jurisprudence also recognises concessions for people
who are ill or unable to perform an act of worship in its usual manner.
Therefore, a
painful condition that prevents you from prostrating normally does not mean you
should abandon salah. Rather, you should perform it in the manner you are able
to manage without causing yourself harm.
3.
Should You Continue Praying?
Yes. You should
continue performing your obligatory prayers while observing the concession
appropriate to your condition.
If the pain is
manageable and prostration does not cause harm, follow your normal method of
prayer. However, if placing your forehead on the ground causes severe pain or
may worsen the injury, do not force it.
The precise ruling
on whether you should use an alternative point of contact or gesture with your
head may depend on the circumstances and the scholarly school you follow. A
qualified scholar can advise you on the details, particularly if the condition
persists.
4.
Take Care of the Pimple
In addition to
observing the religious concession, take care of the affected area. Avoid
putting unnecessary pressure on it, and seek medical attention if it becomes
increasingly swollen, very painful, produces substantial pus, or the swelling
spreads towards your eye.
A painful swelling
on the face may sometimes require medical treatment.
CONCLUSION
If a painful
pimple on your forehead makes normal sujud severely painful or risks worsening
the condition, do not force your forehead onto the ground. Perform your salah
according to your ability and use the appropriate concession where necessary.
May Allah grant
you complete healing, ease your discomfort during prayer, and accept your acts
of worship.
