The Islamic Ruling on Coloured Discharge After Menstruation

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh.

Please, I would like to ask about a matter concerning menstruation. After my menstrual bleeding stopped, I noticed a coloured discharge. Do I need to perform ghusl (the ritual bath) again, or is simply washing the affected area sufficient?

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Dear sister, the ruling on coloured discharge after menstruation depends on whether you have already established that your menstrual period has ended or whether the discharge occurs before you have confirmed your purification.

Discharge may be yellowish, brownish, or dark in colour. Therefore, its colour alone does not always establish whether it should be treated as menstruation.

1. If the Discharge Appears Before You Confirm Purification

If you are still within your menstrual period and have not yet observed a sign of purification, yellowish or brownish discharge associated with menstruation may be considered part of the menstrual period.

In this situation, you should wait until you establish that your menstruation has ended before performing ghusl.

The signs of purification include:

·         The white discharge: A white fluid that some women observe at the end of menstruation.

·         Complete dryness: When the area is dry and no menstrual blood or coloured discharge associated with the period remains.

Not every woman experiences the same sign, so you should consider the sign that reliably indicates the end of your period.

2. If the Discharge Appears After You Have Confirmed Purification

If you have clearly established that your menstruation has ended and performed ghusl, but yellowish or brownish discharge appears afterwards, it is not automatically considered menstruation.

Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

Arabic:

كُنَّا لَا نَعُدُّ الْكُدْرَةَ وَالصُّفْرَةَ بَعْدَ الطُّهْرِ شَيْئًا

Transliteration:

Kunnā lā naʿuddu al-kudrata waṣ-ṣufrata baʿda aṭ-ṭuhri shayʾan.

English translation:

“We did not consider brownish and yellowish discharge after purification to be anything significant.”

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 307.

This narration indicates that yellowish or brownish discharge appearing after established purification is not treated as menstruation merely because of its colour.

Consequently, you do not need to repeat ghusl solely because such discharge appears after you have confirmed purification.

However, you should wash the affected area and perform wudu before praying if the discharge invalidates your wudu. You should also ensure that your body and clothing are clean for prayer. If the discharge continues, further details may be needed concerning wudu and prayer.

3. What If You Are Unsure Whether Your Period Has Ended?

If you are uncertain whether purification has occurred, pay attention to your usual menstrual pattern and the signs of purity you normally experience.

If the situation differs significantly from your usual pattern, or bleeding and coloured discharge continue intermittently, consult a qualified Islamic scholar who understands the jurisprudence of menstruation. The ruling may depend on the timing, duration, and nature of the discharge.

CONCLUSION

In summary:

·         Before confirmed purification: Yellowish or brownish discharge associated with menstruation may still be part of the menstrual period. Wait until purification is established before performing ghusl.

·         After confirmed purification: Yellowish or brownish discharge does not automatically count as menstruation, and repeating ghusl is generally unnecessary solely because of that discharge. Wash the affected area and renew wudu as required before prayer.

The distinction between discharge occurring before and after established purification is essential when determining the correct ruling.
