QUESTION ❓
Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh.
Please, I have a question about a dream I had. I dreamt that a black dog came between my legs while I was standing and wrapped itself tightly around them. I struggled to free my leg, and eventually, I managed to remove it and walk away. However, the dog did not bite me.
What could this dream mean in Islam? Thank you
very much.
ANSWER ❗️
Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and
blessings be upon His Messenger, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
1. Does a Black Dog in a Dream Have a Specific
Meaning?
In Islam, not every dream has a particular
meaning, and it is not correct to assign a definite interpretation to every
object or event seen in a dream without reliable evidence from the Qur’an and
authentic Sunnah.
Although some traditional dream-interpretation
books attribute symbolic meanings to dogs, such interpretations should not
automatically be treated as established Islamic teachings. We cannot
confidently conclude that the black dog in this dream represents an enemy, a
jinn, witchcraft, or someone plotting against the dreamer.
Similarly, the fact that the dog did not bite the
dreamer does not establish that Allah has revealed a promise of protection from
a particular person's plans through the dream.
2. What Does Islam Teach About Dreams?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon
him) explained that dreams can be of different kinds: a good dream from Allah,
a distressing dream from Satan, and a dream arising from what a person thinks
about while awake.
This classification is reported in Sahih
Muslim, Hadith 2263.
Therefore, a dream involving a frightening animal
may simply be a disturbing dream. Its appearance alone is not sufficient
evidence that something bad will happen or that a particular person intends
harm.
3. What Should You Do After Having a Disturbing
Dream?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
taught Muslims how to respond to unpleasant dreams.
If you experience a disturbing dream, you should:
1. Seek Allah's protection from Satan and from the evil of the
dream.
2. Spit lightly and dryly to your left three times, as taught in
the Sunnah.
3. Turn to your other side.
4. Avoid spreading the disturbing dream among people.
5. Pray if you wish, following the guidance reported in the
authentic narrations.
These instructions are found in the hadiths of Sahih
al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim concerning unpleasant dreams.
You may also maintain your regular morning and
evening adhkar, recite Ayat al-Kursi, and recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah
Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas before sleeping as part of your general Islamic
devotional practice.
4. Should You Suspect Someone Because of This
Dream?
No. You should not suspect or accuse
anyone of being an enemy, practising witchcraft, or intending to harm you
solely because of this dream.
There is no reliable basis for concluding from
the dream that someone close to you is plotting against you. Such an assumption
could create unnecessary fear, mistrust, or conflict.
Instead, place your trust in Allah, continue your
normal activities, and judge people according to their actual conduct rather
than the contents of a dream.
CONCLUSION
The dream of a black dog holding your legs
without biting you has no definite interpretation that can be established from
the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. We should therefore avoid claiming that it
predicts an enemy's actions, guarantees protection, or indicates the presence
of jinn or witchcraft.
If the dream frightened you, follow the Sunnah
for dealing with disturbing dreams and seek comfort in remembering Allah. There
is no need to become anxious or to suspect anyone because of it.
