QUESTION ❓
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh.
A woman says:
“I dreamed that my mother had three
cows. One of them gave birth today, and the other two gave birth the following
day. Please, Shaykh, interpret this dream for me. Jazakum Allahu khayran.”
ANSWER ❗️
Wa Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh.
May Allah reward you for asking and
make the dream a source of goodness for you and your mother.
It is important to understand that
Islam does not provide an authentic, fixed interpretation for every
object or event seen in a dream. Therefore, we should not say with certainty
that three cows represent three years of prosperity, or that the birth of the
cows necessarily means that money, healing, or specific good news will arrive
within one or two days.
The Qur’an does mention cows in the
story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him. The king saw seven fat cows
being eaten by seven lean cows, and Prophet Yusuf interpreted the dream as
referring to seven years of abundance followed by seven difficult years. Allah
says:
Qāla tazraʿūna sabʿa sinīna da’aban
famā ḥaṣadtum fadharūhu fī sunbulihī illā qalīlan mimmā ta’kulūn.
“He said, ‘You will plant for seven
consecutive years, and what you harvest, leave it in its ears, except a little
from which you will eat.’”
— Qur’an 12:47
However, this does not
establish a general Islamic rule that every dream involving cows represents
years of wealth or hardship. Prophet Yusuf was given a special ability to
interpret dreams by Allah.
What
Can Be Said About This Dream?
The dream may be understood
generally as something that the dreamer hopes will be good and beneficial,
particularly because the cows were giving birth rather than being harmed or
dying. But this is only a possible hopeful reading, not a definite
interpretation.
The fact that there were three cows
and that they gave birth at different times should also not be assigned
a specific prophetic meaning without authentic evidence.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that dreams are of different types. He said:
الرُّؤْيَا
الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ
Al-ru’yā al-ṣāliḥatu min Allāh,
wal-ḥulmu min al-shayṭān.
“A good dream is from Allah, while a
bad dream is from Satan.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6985; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2261
Therefore, if the dream brought
happiness and peace to the dreamer, she may thank Allah and hope for good. She
does not, however, need to expect that a particular amount of wealth, healing,
or another event must happen because of the dream.
What
Should She Do?
She may make du‘ā for Allah to grant
her mother health, lawful provision, protection and blessing. If the dream was
pleasant, she may also mention it to someone trustworthy who will interpret it
positively and responsibly.
Most importantly, she should not
make important decisions or establish certainty about the future based solely
on a dream.
Allah alone knows the unseen:
قُل
لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
Qul lā yaʿlamu man fī al-samāwāti wa
al-arḍi al-ghayba illā Allāh.
“Say, ‘None in the heavens and the
earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”
— Qur’an 27:65
Conclusion
The dream of three cows giving birth
may be received with hope for goodness and blessing, but there is no
authentic evidence that it definitively means three years of prosperity,
immediate wealth, healing, or good news arriving within two days.
A Muslim should hope for good from a
pleasant dream while leaving its true meaning to Allah.

best.
