Question
Assalamu
Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
What is the Islamic ruling on someone who feels happy when they hear that the world is approaching its end? A woman told me that since her mother passed away, she feels happy whenever she listens to a sermon or hears someone say that the world is coming to an end. May Allah increase you in knowledge and wisdom.
Answer
Wa
Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In Islam, the
ruling on this matter depends on the reason behind the person's feelings. We
must distinguish between longing to meet Allah and hoping for the Hereafter, on
the one hand, and wishing for death because of overwhelming distress or a
desire to escape life's difficulties, on the other.
1.
Longing to Meet Allah and Hoping for the Hereafter
If the woman's
happiness comes from her hope of meeting Allah, attaining Paradise, and being
reunited with her deceased mother through Allah's mercy, we should not hastily
condemn her feelings. Such a longing may arise from love, grief, and hope in
Allah's mercy.
However, we cannot
conclude from this feeling alone that she has attained a particular spiritual
rank or that she is guaranteed to reunite with her mother in Paradise. That
matter rests with Allah, and a Muslim should combine hope in His mercy with
faith, righteous deeds, and sincere supplication.
Allah, the Most
High, says:
“And those who
believe and whose descendants follow them in faith—We will join with them their
descendants…”
— Qur'an 52:21
This verse gives
believers hope in Allah's generosity in Paradise. Nevertheless, it should not
be used to make an unconditional guarantee about the fate of any particular
individual.
2.
Grief After the Loss of a Mother
Losing one's
mother can be deeply painful. A person may feel that life has changed
considerably after such a loss and may long for the day when they hope to meet
their loved one again.
If this woman's
feelings began after her mother's death, she may be expressing grief and
longing rather than an actual wish for the destruction of the world. She should
be treated with compassion, understanding, and gentle advice rather than blame.
She can continue
to honour her mother by praying for her forgiveness and mercy, giving charity
on her behalf where appropriate, and maintaining good relationships with
relatives and others whom her mother loved.
3.
Is It Permissible to Wish for Death Because of Hardship?
A distinction must
be made between hoping for Allah's reward in the Hereafter and wishing for
death because life has become painful or difficult.
The Prophet
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited a Muslim from wishing for
death because of a hardship that has befallen them. He taught that a person who
feels unable to bear a difficulty should instead say:
Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا
لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي
Transliteration:
Allahumma
ahyini ma kanatil-hayatu khayran li, wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khayran
li.
English
translation:
“O Allah, keep me
alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is
better for me.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
and Sahih Muslim
This supplication
teaches a Muslim to entrust the matter to Allah, who knows what is best for His
servant.
Therefore, if the
woman's happiness reflects a wish to escape unbearable grief or a desire for
her own life to end soon, she should be approached with kindness and encouraged
to seek Allah's help, speak with trusted people, and obtain support for her grief
when needed.
4.
What Does the Hadith About Meeting Allah Mean?
The Prophet
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whoever loves to
meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
and Sahih Muslim
This hadith speaks
about a believer's response to meeting Allah, particularly when death
approaches and the believer receives the glad tidings of Allah's pleasure and
mercy. It should not be taken as a general instruction to wish for death or to
conclude that anyone who welcomes the thought of the world's end necessarily
possesses a high level of faith.
A Muslim should
hope to meet Allah in a state that pleases Him while continuing to value the
opportunity to perform righteous deeds during their lifetime.
5.
What Should She Do?
Rather than
concentrating on when the world will end, she should focus on preparing for the
Hereafter through righteous deeds, including:
1.
Maintaining the five daily prayers and fulfilling other religious
obligations.
2.
Repenting sincerely and avoiding sinful actions.
3.
Giving charity and helping people in need.
4.
Praying for her mother's forgiveness and mercy.
5.
Asking Allah to grant her patience, comfort, and a good ending.
6.
Seeking support from trustworthy family members, knowledgeable
religious teachers, or a grief counsellor if her sadness becomes overwhelming.
When someone asked
the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Hour, he asked
the person what they had prepared for it. This teaches us that preparing for
the Hereafter is more important than merely wondering when the end will come.
— Sahih al-Bukhari
and Sahih Muslim
Conclusion
Feeling comforted
by the hope of meeting Allah and being reunited with a deceased loved one is
not, by itself, sufficient reason to condemn someone. Nevertheless, we should
not automatically interpret happiness at the thought of the world's end as
proof of strong faith, spiritual excellence, or certainty of entering Paradise.
The woman's
feelings should be understood in light of her circumstances, especially her
grief following her mother's death. She should be encouraged to maintain hope
in Allah's mercy, pray for her mother, perform righteous deeds, and avoid
wishing for death merely because of hardship.
