Are Vomit and a Baby’s Regurgitated Milk Considered Impure in Islam?

Question

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

My question is about the milk or food that babies bring back up through their mouths after feeding. Is this regurgitated milk considered impure (najāsah)? Similarly, what is the Islamic ruling on vomit when it touches a person's body or clothing? Thank you. May Allah increase you in beneficial knowledge.

Answer

Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

May Allah reward you with goodness and grant us beneficial knowledge.

Islamic scholars have differed over whether vomit and a baby's regurgitated milk are considered impure. Some scholars regard vomit as najāsah, while others distinguish between different types of vomit and the condition of the material that comes out of the stomach. Therefore, this issue should be discussed with due regard for the recognised differences among Islamic jurists.

1. The Ruling on Vomit

Some scholars, including scholars within the Hanafi, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali schools of Islamic jurisprudence, consider vomit impure, although the details and conditions of their rulings differ.

There are also juristic discussions about the condition of the material that comes out of the stomach and whether it has changed from its original state. In Maliki jurisprudence, relevant discussions distinguish between different circumstances rather than treating every instance of vomiting identically.

Consequently, it would be inaccurate to claim that all Islamic scholars agree on a single ruling covering every type of vomit.

2. The Ruling on a Baby’s Regurgitated Milk

When a baby drinks milk and subsequently brings some of it back up through the mouth, this is commonly referred to as regurgitation.

The ruling depends on the juristic position being followed and, according to some scholarly discussions, the condition of the material that comes out.

Some scholars regard material coming from the stomach as impure, while other juristic discussions make distinctions based on its condition. Therefore, the matter should not be presented as though there is no recognised scholarly disagreement.

If a baby's regurgitated milk touches clothing or the body, a Muslim should not automatically assume that they must repeat washing repeatedly whenever there is uncertainty. Where washing is required according to the ruling being followed, the affected area should be cleaned appropriately.

3. What Should a Muslim Do in Practice?

The following practical guidance can help:

1.      Clean the affected area when appropriate. If vomit or regurgitated milk has soiled clothing or the body, washing it is a reasonable way to maintain cleanliness and is required according to the scholarly view that considers the substance impure.

2.      Avoid excessive doubt. Do not repeatedly wash clothing or the body merely because of uncertainty, particularly when there is no clear evidence that impurity is present.

3.      Follow a reliable scholarly position. If you ordinarily follow a particular school of Islamic jurisprudence, consult a qualified scholar familiar with its rulings.

4.      Care for babies without undue hardship. Parents should maintain cleanliness while avoiding unnecessary difficulty or obsessive concern over ordinary infant regurgitation.

References for Further Study

For further discussion of the issue, one may consult Al-Majmūʿ Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab, 2/551, and Fatāwā al-Lajnah al-Dāʾimah, 4/193, as cited in the original discussion. The precise passages and editions should be checked before quoting them as definitive evidence for a particular ruling.

Conclusion

Scholars differ over the impurity of vomit and a baby's regurgitated milk. Some consider them impure, while juristic discussions also distinguish between different circumstances and the condition of the material.

Accordingly, the ruling should not be presented as a matter of unanimous agreement. Muslims should follow reliable scholarly guidance, maintain cleanliness, and avoid unnecessary hardship or excessive doubts.
