The Question
Assalamu
Alaikum, Sheikh.
I woke up in a
state of janābah (major ritual impurity), but I did not perform the
obligatory bath (ghusl). I performed the Fajr, Dhuhr, and Asr prayers.
In the evening, after taking a bath, I noticed what appeared to be semen on my
underwear.
Please, are the prayers I performed valid, or must I repeat them? Thank you.
The
Answer
Wa Alaikum
Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
All praise belongs
to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, Muhammad (peace
and blessings be upon him).
The ruling depends
on whether you can establish when the semen was discharged and whether you were
certain that you were in a state of janābah before performing those
prayers.
1.
The Obligation of Ghusl Before Prayer
If a person is
certain that they are in a state of janābah, they must perform ghusl
before offering the obligatory prayer.
Allah says:
Arabic:
وَإِنْ
كُنْتُمْ جُنُبًا فَاطَّهَّرُوا
Transliteration:
Wa in kuntum
junuban faṭṭahharū.
English
translation:
“And if you are in
a state of full impurity, then take a full bath.”
Reference: Qur'an 5:6.
Therefore, if you
knew that you were in a state of janābah before Fajr and did not
perform ghusl before praying Fajr, Dhuhr, and Asr, those prayers were
not valid. You must perform ghusl and repeat the prayers that you
performed while in that state.
2.
What If You Only Discovered the Semen in the Evening?
The situation is
different if you discovered semen on your underwear later but were uncertain
when it had been discharged.
Scholars have
discussed this issue in detail, including how to determine the likely time of
discharge when a person discovers semen after sleeping. The ruling may depend
on the circumstances, such as whether the person slept more than once and
whether there is a reasonable basis for associating the discharge with a
particular period of sleep.
Consequently, it
would not be accurate to say that every person in this situation must
automatically repeat every prayer performed since Fajr. Nor should one assume
that only the most recent prayer needs to be repeated.
If you cannot
establish when the discharge occurred, consult a qualified scholar and explain
the details of your circumstances, including your sleeping periods and when you
discovered the semen. This will help determine which prayers, if any, must be
repeated according to the relevant school of Islamic jurisprudence.
Conclusion
If you are certain
that you were in a state of janābah before performing Fajr, Dhuhr, and
Asr, and you did not perform ghusl before those prayers, you must
perform ghusl and repeat them.
However, if you
only discovered the semen later and do not know when it was discharged, the
ruling requires further consideration of your circumstances.
