Dreaming of Animals and Mysterious Writing in the Sky: An Islamic Perspective

The Question

Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh.

Please help me understand a strange dream I had. It has left me feeling unsettled, and I have been unable to find peace of mind.

In the dream, I looked up at the sky and saw images of several animals among the clouds. I saw an elephant, a zebra, the head of a lion, the head of a horse, and the head of a dog. The images appeared to move before gradually disappearing.

Then I saw some words written in the sky. The first phrase was “THAT IS THIS.” Another read, “THE HOLY HEART IS YOU,” followed by “GOD BLESS US.”

I took a pen and paper and tried to copy the writing, but the words kept disappearing quickly. There were more words than I could record, and when I looked up again, the writing had vanished completely. These are the only phrases I managed to remember.

What could this dream mean according to Islam?

The Answer

Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

May Allah grant you peace of mind, tranquillity, and steadfastness in faith.

It is understandable that such a vivid and unusual dream would leave you wondering about its meaning. However, when interpreting dreams from an Islamic perspective, it is important to distinguish between what Islamic sources establish and what would merely be speculation.

There is no reliable basis for concluding that the particular animals and English phrases in your dream are definite messages from Allah or predictions about your future.

1. Seeing an Elephant, a Zebra, a Lion, a Horse, and a Dog in the Sky

The animals you saw were unusual because they appeared among the clouds, moved, and eventually disappeared.

Some traditional dream-interpretation works assign symbolic meanings to particular animals. However, interpretations vary according to the source and circumstances, and we should not attribute specific meanings to Ibn Sirin or other scholars without reliable evidence.

The Qur'an and authentic Sunnah do not establish that:

·         An elephant in a dream necessarily signifies wealth, power, or high status.

·         A zebra necessarily represents balance between opposing aspects of life.

·         A lion's head necessarily signifies leadership or protection from enemies.

·         A horse's head necessarily predicts success or advancement.

·         A dog's head necessarily indicates loyalty or warns of particular people.

Therefore, these images should not be treated as evidence that you will attain a particular position, encounter specific people, or experience a major change in your life.

2. What About the Words “THAT IS THIS”?

The phrase “THAT IS THIS” may seem mysterious, particularly because it appeared in the sky and disappeared before you could record everything.

Nevertheless, there is no established Islamic interpretation of this particular phrase in a dream. We cannot confidently conclude that it refers to a hidden truth, a coming opportunity, or a connection between events in your life.

The fact that you remembered the words does not, by itself, establish that they carry a supernatural message.

3. The Phrase “THE HOLY HEART IS YOU”

This phrase may sound encouraging, but it should not be taken as proof that you possess a special spiritual status, that your heart has been declared pure by Allah, or that you have received a divine revelation.

In Islam, a person's spiritual standing is not established through mysterious dream messages. Rather, Muslims are encouraged to pursue sincerity, righteous conduct, repentance, and obedience to Allah.

If the phrase reminds you to cultivate kindness, honesty, and good intentions, you may take those qualities as beneficial personal reflections without assuming that the dream itself guarantees anything about your spiritual status.

4. Seeing the Words “GOD BLESS US”

The phrase expresses a supplication for blessing. You may certainly ask Allah to bless you and your family, grant you well-being, and guide you towards what is good.

However, seeing these words in a dream does not establish that a particular blessing has been promised or that you have received special protection from an unseen danger.

It is better to maintain hope in Allah through prayer and righteous deeds than to depend on an uncertain interpretation.

5. Why Did the Writing Disappear Before You Could Copy It?

The disappearing words may have contributed to your feeling that the dream contained an important message that you were unable to preserve.

However, we cannot conclude that the words disappeared because they contained secrets that were not yet meant to be revealed, or because you missed an important opportunity.

Dreams can contain fragmented, unusual, and rapidly changing images. Trying to remember or record every detail does not necessarily mean that the dream contains a hidden message that must be recovered.

You do not need to feel anxious about the words you could not remember.

6. What Does Islam Teach About Such Dreams?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that dreams may be of three types: glad tidings from Allah, distressing dreams from Satan, and dreams arising from a person's own thoughts.

Reference: Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2263; numbering may vary by edition.

Because we cannot establish the source or precise meaning of your dream, it would be inappropriate to label it definitively as a divine message, a warning, or a prediction.

Allah says:

Arabic:

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Transliteration:

Qul lā yaʿlamu man fis-samāwāti wal-arḍil-ghayba illallāh.

English translation:

“Say, ‘None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”

Reference: Qur'an 27:65.

This reminds us not to make confident claims about unseen matters without reliable evidence.

7. What Should You Do Now?

Since the dream has left you unsettled, consider the following guidance:

·         Seek refuge in Allah if you feel distressed by the dream.

·         Maintain your regular prayers and supplications.

·         Do not make important decisions based on the animals or words you saw.

·         Avoid anyone who claims to know your future with certainty from this dream or uses it to frighten you.

·         If the dream continues to trouble you, speak with a trusted person or a knowledgeable scholar who will reassure you without making unsupported claims.

Conclusion

Your dream of moving animal images and disappearing writing in the sky was unusual and memorable. Nevertheless, the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah do not provide a reliable basis for assigning definite meanings to these particular images or phrases.

You may take the words as a personal reminder to seek Allah's blessings and cultivate good character, but you should not assume that they establish a special spiritual status or predict future events.

There is no need to be frightened by the dream or to worry about the writing you could not remember. Continue to trust Allah, seek what is good, and leave the unknown meaning of the dream to Him.
