Dreaming That Your Ex-Husband Threw a Lizard at You: An Islamic Perspective

The Question

Question:

Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh.

I dreamed that my husband and I had finished marital relations, and I poured water into a bathtub so that we could perform the ritual bath (ghusl). While looking at the water, I noticed a lizard in it. Suddenly, my former husband appeared, picked up the lizard, and threw it onto my body.

Please, what is the Islamic interpretation of this dream? May Allah reward you with goodness.

The Answer

Wa Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

May Allah grant you peace of mind and protect you from fear, distress, and harm.

Dear sister, it is important to understand that we cannot establish a definite interpretation of this dream from the details provided alone. Seeing a lizard in a dream does not prove that you have an enemy, that someone is practising magic against you, or that your former husband intends to cause problems in your present life.

Likewise, the dream is not evidence that your former husband is doing anything harmful to you in reality.

1. What Does This Dream Mean in Islam?

Islam teaches that dreams can have different origins. Some may be good dreams, others may be disturbing dreams, and some may reflect a person's thoughts and experiences.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the different categories of dreams in authentic narrations, including those recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2263.

Therefore, we should not claim that every dream contains a hidden message or predicts something that will happen in the future.

Although the appearance of your former husband and the lizard may have felt frightening, there is no reliable basis for concluding that the dream predicts conflict, indicates witchcraft, or reveals another person's intentions.

2. What Should You Do If the Dream Frightens You?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught Muslims how to respond to unpleasant dreams.

You may follow these practices:

1.      Seek Allah's protection from Satan and from the evil associated with what you saw.

2.      Blow lightly to your left three times, as described in the authentic narrations concerning disturbing dreams.

3.      Turn onto your other side if you wish.

4.      Avoid dwelling on the dream or allowing it to create unnecessary fear and suspicion.

5.      Maintain your regular supplications and remembrance of Allah.

These teachings are reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

3. Should You Be Worried About Your Former Husband?

You should not accuse your former husband of wrongdoing merely because he appeared in your dream.

If there are genuine difficulties or concerns involving him in your waking life, address them according to the actual circumstances and available evidence. If there are no such concerns, there is no reason to assume that the dream indicates a problem.

Your peace of mind is important, and you should not let an uncertain dream become a source of unnecessary anxiety.

4. Maintain Your Daily Islamic Supplications

Continue observing your daily prayers and reciting the supplications recommended in Islam. You may also recite Ayat al-Kursi and Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas as part of your regular remembrance of Allah.

Do these acts of worship to seek Allah's protection and draw closer to Him, not because the dream proves that you are under a spiritual attack.

Conclusion

Dear sister, there is no sound basis for concluding that your dream means your former husband wants to harm you, that someone has practised magic against you, or that you are affected by envy.

Do not be frightened or build accusations and decisions upon the dream alone. Seek Allah's protection, maintain your supplications, and judge real-life situations using evidence rather than dreams.

May Allah grant you tranquillity, protect you from harm, and bless you with peace and well-being.
