QUESTION ❓
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa
barakatuh.
What is the Islamic ruling if a husband wants marital intimacy with his wife, but she says that he should first give her something before she agrees?
ANSWER
❗️
Wa alaikumussalam wa rahmatullahi wa
barakatuh.
The ruling depends on what she is
asking for and why she is asking for it.
Marriage is not supposed to operate
as a financial transaction in which one spouse sells access to the other. At
the same time, spouses have mutual rights and responsibilities, and a wife's
legitimate financial and personal rights must not be ignored.
If
She Is Asking for Something That Is Her Right
If what the wife is requesting is
something the husband is already required to provide—for example, necessary
maintenance, food, clothing, accommodation, or another legitimate marital
right—then the husband should fulfil that obligation.
It would be wrong for a husband to
withhold his wife's established rights.
Allah says:
وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ
بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
Transliteration:
Wa ʿāshirūhunna bil-maʿrūf.
Translation:
“And live with them in kindness.”
Qur’an 4:19
What
If She Is Asking for a Gift or Money?
If she simply says, for example, “I
would like you to buy me something,” and the matter is a voluntary gift rather
than an obligatory right, spouses should approach the situation through
kindness and mutual understanding.
It is better for a couple to
communicate about their needs rather than turn marital intimacy into a
bargaining mechanism.
Likewise, a husband should not use
financial support or gifts as a means of pressuring his wife into intimacy.
What
About Refusing Without a Legitimate Reason?
Islam recognises marital intimacy as
one of the rights within marriage. The Prophet ﷺ
strongly warned against deliberately refusing a spouse without a legitimate
reason.
At the same time, this teaching
should not be used to justify coercion, threats, humiliation, or harm.
Marriage is founded upon affection, mercy and good treatment.
Allah says:
Transliteration:
Wa min āyātihi an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwājan litaskunū ilayhā wa
jaʿala baynakum mawaddatan wa raḥmah.
Translation:
“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves
so that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you affection
and mercy.”
Qur’an 30:21
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
«خَيْرُكُمْ
خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ»
Transliteration:
Khayrukum khayrukum li-ahlihi.
Translation:
“The best of you are those who are best to their families.”

Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 3895.
A
Wife May Have a Legitimate Reason to Decline
A wife is not required to respond to
every request regardless of her circumstances. Menstruation, illness,
significant physical harm, emotional distress, or another legitimate
circumstance can affect the ruling.
Similarly, a husband must consider
his wife's wellbeing and cannot deliberately cause her harm.
The general Islamic principle is:
«لَا ضَرَرَ
وَلَا ضِرَارَ»
Transliteration:
Lā ḍarar wa lā ḍirār.
Meaning:
“There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.”
Reference:
Sunan Ibn Mājah 2341.
The
Best Approach
If the wife is asking for something
because she feels neglected, under-supported, or deprived of one of her rights,
the couple should address the underlying problem rather than treating
intimacy as payment for fulfilling that right.
If she is simply demanding money or
a gift every time the subject arises, that is not a healthy way to manage a
marriage either. They should discuss their expectations openly and
respectfully.
Neither spouse should use intimacy,
money, anger, or threats as a weapon against the other.
Conclusion
A wife should not ordinarily turn
marital intimacy into a commercial transaction by demanding payment as its
price. However, if she is asking the husband to fulfil a legitimate right or
obligation, he should fulfil it, and the matter should not be dismissed as
merely a demand for money.
At the same time, the husband should
not use the wife's marital rights as a justification for coercion or
mistreatment.
The sound Islamic approach is mutual
rights, kindness, communication, affection and avoidance of harm.
