Dreaming of a Deceased Brother in a Stream Eating an Apple: An Islamic Perspective

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh.

I would like to ask about a dream someone had. He dreamt that he saw his deceased brother in a stream, eating an apple. He asked his late brother to give him some of the apple he was eating, but the deceased refused. Instead, he told him that he would not give him the apple there and that he should follow him to his house to receive it.

Please, what is the Islamic interpretation of this dream?

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

First, we ask Allah, the Most Merciful, to forgive the deceased, have mercy upon him, illuminate his grave, and make Paradise his final abode.

Regarding this dream, it is important to remember that not every dream has a definite interpretation, and a person's condition in the Hereafter cannot be established solely through a dream. Allah alone possesses complete knowledge of the unseen.

In Islam, dreams may include glad tidings from Allah, reflections of a person's thoughts and experiences, or distressing dreams from Satan. Therefore, we should not assign a certain meaning to every object or event seen in a dream without reliable evidence.

1. Seeing a Deceased Brother in a Stream

Seeing a deceased person in a stream or another body of water does not, by itself, establish whether that person is experiencing comfort or punishment in the Hereafter.

There is no established evidence in the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah that allows us to conclude that the stream in this particular dream represents a specific spiritual condition of the deceased.

If the dream appeared peaceful and comforting, the dreamer may hope for Allah's goodness and mercy. Nevertheless, he should not treat the dream as proof of his brother's condition after death.

2. Seeing the Deceased Eating an Apple

There is no established evidence in the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah that seeing a deceased person eating an apple in a dream necessarily means that the deceased is enjoying the reward of his deeds in the Hereafter.

Although traditional dream-interpretation literature sometimes assigns symbolic meanings to particular foods, such interpretations should not be presented as certain Islamic teachings without reliable evidence.

The most appropriate response is to acknowledge that the precise meaning of this dream is unknown rather than make a definite claim about the deceased's condition.

3. The Deceased Refuses to Give the Apple and Invites the Dreamer to His House

This part of the dream may naturally cause the dreamer to wonder whether it carries a warning. However, there is no reliable basis for concluding that the deceased's refusal to share the apple signifies withheld wealth or that the invitation to his house predicts the dreamer's death.

The dreamer should not become frightened or assume that he will die soon because of this dream. Dreams do not provide reliable grounds for determining when a person will die or predicting a particular future event.

If the deceased left behind a known debt, entrusted property, or an outstanding obligation, the family should investigate it through reliable information and address it according to Islamic principles. The dream alone, however, is not evidence that such an obligation exists.

Likewise, no major financial, family, or personal decision should be made solely because of this dream.

4. What Can the Family Do for the Deceased?

One of the beneficial things the family can do is pray to Allah to forgive the deceased and grant him mercy. They may also give charity on his behalf, where appropriate, and settle any established debts he left behind according to Islamic law.

Allah describes the supplication of the believers for those who preceded them in faith:

Arabic:

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ

Transliteration:

Rabbanaghfir lanā wa li-ikhwāninal-ladhīna sabaqūnā bil-īmān.

English translation:

“Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith.”

Reference: Qur'an 59:10.

This verse reminds us of the importance of praying for fellow believers who have passed away.

The dreamer can therefore continue making sincere supplications for his brother, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him a place in Paradise.

CONCLUSION

In summary, we cannot establish that seeing a deceased brother in a stream eating an apple means that he is enjoying blessings in the Hereafter. Similarly, the invitation to follow him home does not establish that the dreamer will die or experience any particular misfortune.

The correct approach is to avoid unsupported interpretations, place one's trust in Allah, and pray for the deceased.

May Allah forgive the deceased, have mercy upon him, grant patience to his family, and unite them in goodness in the Hereafter.
