QUESTION ❓
Assalamu
Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Please, what is
the Islamic ruling on suspicion within marriage?
My husband
frequently accuses me of having another man who is interested in me. By Allah,
I have no relationship with any man who is trying to come between my husband
and me. Even when I want to go to school, he questions whether I am genuinely
going there. He constantly shows a lack of trust in me.
Please, what is the Islamic position on this behaviour, and how should we manage our marriage in this situation?
ANSWER
❗️
Wa Alaikumus Salam
wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
All praise is due
to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, Muhammad (peace
and blessings be upon him).
We ask Allah to
bring peace, understanding, and affection between you and your husband, remove
the causes of disagreement, and make your home a place of tranquillity and
mercy.
Marriage is a
serious covenant in Islam, founded on mutual rights, trust, compassion,
respect, and good treatment. Although disagreements and occasional doubts may
arise between spouses, they should be addressed with fairness, wisdom, and
guidance from Islamic teachings.
1.
The Islamic Ruling on Unfounded Suspicion Between Spouses
Islam prohibits
baseless suspicion, including suspicion between husband and wife. A husband
should not repeatedly accuse his wife of committing an immoral act without
reliable evidence, nor should he automatically interpret her ordinary
activities, such as attending school, as signs of infidelity.
Allah, the Most
High, says:
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا
مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ
Transliteration:
Yā
ayyuhalladhīna āmanū, ijtanibū kathīran minaẓ-ẓanni, inna baʿḍaẓ-ẓanni ithm.
English
translation:
“O you who have
believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.”
Reference: Qur'an 49:12.
The Prophet
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
Arabic:
إِيَّاكُمْ وَالظَّنَّ، فَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ أَكْذَبُ
الْحَدِيثِ
Transliteration:
Iyyākum
waẓ-ẓann, fa-innaẓ-ẓanna akdhabul-ḥadīth.
English
translation:
“Beware of
suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 6064; Sahih Muslim 2563.
These teachings
emphasise the importance of avoiding unfounded assumptions. If a husband has no
reliable evidence of wrongdoing, he should not allow suspicion to become the
basis of his treatment of his wife. The same principle applies to a wife who
suspects her husband without justification.
2.
Does Constant Suspicion Invalidate the Marriage?
No. A husband's
repeated suspicion of his wife does not, by itself, invalidate their marriage
or mean that the marriage has ended.
However,
persistent accusations can damage trust, affection, and emotional well-being if
they are not addressed. For this reason, couples should make a sincere effort
to resolve the problem before it causes further harm to their relationship.
It is also
important to distinguish ordinary suspicion from a formal accusation of
adultery. Islamic law has specific rules concerning accusations of zina, and
such cases require careful consideration by qualified scholars. A person should
not confuse every expression of suspicion with the specific legal rulings
governing formal accusations.
3.
A Husband's Responsibility Does Not Justify Unfair Treatment
Islam recognises a
husband's responsibility to care for his family and protect the welfare of the
household. At the same time, a wife has rights to respectful treatment,
fairness, and protection from unjustified harm.
Allah says:
Arabic:
وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
Transliteration:
Wa
ʿāshirūhunna bil-maʿrūf.
English
translation:
“And live with
them in kindness.”
Reference: Qur'an 4:19.
This verse
establishes the principle of treating one's wife with kindness and fairness.
If a wife attends
school to pursue her education and observes the relevant Islamic obligations,
her husband should not accuse her of infidelity without evidence.
At the same time,
marriage involves mutual responsibilities, and questions about education,
movement, and family arrangements should be discussed fairly and respectfully.
Neither spouse should use suspicion as an excuse to disregard the other's
legitimate rights.
4.
What Should the Wife Do to Address the Problem?
The following
steps may help restore understanding and trust.
First:
Speak to your husband calmly.
Choose a suitable
time when both of you are calm. Explain how his repeated accusations affect you
emotionally and how they undermine peace within the marriage.
You can reassure
him of your commitment to the marriage while making it clear that constant
accusations without evidence are hurtful and unfair.
Second:
Try to understand the reason for his suspicion.
Ask him
respectfully whether a particular incident has caused his concern or whether he
is struggling with fear and insecurity.
There may be a
misunderstanding or misinformation that needs to be clarified. If there is a
genuine misunderstanding, address it honestly without allowing unsupported
accusations to become a permanent feature of the relationship.
Third:
Discuss your education and daily activities openly.
If you are
attending school, explaining your timetable and usual arrangements may help
both of you understand each other's responsibilities.
However, this does
not mean that you must continually prove your innocence or accept unlimited
monitoring when there is no reasonable basis for suspicion. Trust should be
built through mutual honesty, respect, and responsible conduct.
Fourth:
Both spouses should protect the trust within the marriage.
Husband and wife
should avoid conduct that violates their marital commitments or undermines
mutual trust. They should also avoid gossip, spreading private matters
unnecessarily, and accepting unverified allegations about one another.
Ordinary, lawful
interactions with other people should not automatically be treated as evidence
of wrongdoing.
Fifth:
Seek mediation if the problem continues.
If repeated
discussions do not resolve the problem, consider seeking assistance from a
knowledgeable and fair Islamic scholar or trusted mediators from both families.
Allah says:
Transliteration:
Wa in khiftum
shiqāqa baynihimā fabʿathū ḥakaman min ahlihi wa ḥakaman min ahlihā, in yurīdā
iṣlāḥan yuwaffiqillāhu baynahumā.
English
translation:
“And if you fear
dissension between them, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator
from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it
between them.”
Reference: Qur'an 4:35.
This verse
provides guidance for seeking reconciliation when marital disagreements become
serious.
If the accusations
are accompanied by threats, intimidation, or other forms of abuse, seek help
from trustworthy people who can protect your safety. Preserving a marriage does
not require accepting harmful treatment without seeking assistance.
5.
Must the Wife Stop Attending School to Prove Her Innocence?
Not simply because
her husband suspects her.
The couple should
discuss educational commitments and household responsibilities in light of
their circumstances and Islamic obligations. However, a wife should not
automatically abandon her education or all lawful interactions with others
merely to satisfy repeated, unsupported suspicions.
Likewise, the
husband should not assume that every absence from home indicates infidelity.
Any genuine concern should be addressed through evidence, honest discussion,
and fair consideration of both spouses' rights.
The aim should be
to establish reasonable understanding and mutual trust, not to make one spouse
live under constant accusation.
CONCLUSION
Dear sister, if
you are being truthful about having no inappropriate relationship with another
man, remain honest, calm, and committed to protecting the dignity of your
marriage. Make a sincere effort to discuss the matter with your husband,
understand his concerns, and seek reconciliation.
However, remember
that repeated accusations without evidence are not a sound foundation
for a healthy marriage. A husband has the right to expect
faithfulness, but that does not justify injustice or baseless allegations. Both
spouses are responsible for respecting one another's rights and preserving the
trust upon which marriage depends.
We ask Allah to
guide your husband, remove unfounded suspicions from your home, restore mutual
trust, and fill your marriage with love, mercy, and tranquillity.
