The Question
Assalamu
Alaikum, Sheikh.
I hope you and
your family, students, and colleagues are doing well.
I had three dreams
on separate occasions, and I would like to know whether they have any meaning
in Islam.
In the first dream, I saw a bright full moon, like the moon on the fifteenth night of the lunar month. It descended towards the ground during the daytime, although there was no intense sunlight; the atmosphere resembled early morning. When the moon came down, a small part of it fell into a toilet, even though there is no toilet in that particular location in real life.
The following day,
I dreamt of seeing stars in the sky, also during daylight or early morning
rather than at night.
Two days later, I
dreamt of hearing the rumbling sound of water accompanied by a storm. I heard
the rumbling once, but I felt neither fear nor distress in the dream or after
waking up.
Please explain the
possible Islamic significance of these dreams. Thank you.
The
Answer
Wa Alaikum
Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
May Allah grant
you goodness, peace of mind, and steadfastness in faith.
You have described
three vivid dreams involving celestial bodies and the sound of a storm. It is
natural to wonder whether they are connected. However, an important principle
in Islam is that we should not assign definite meanings to dreams
without reliable evidence from the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah.
1.
Dreaming of a Bright Full Moon Descending During the Day
The moon appears
in the Qur'an in several contexts, including as one of Allah's signs in
creation. However, the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah do not establish a universal
rule that seeing a full moon descend in a dream means that a person will gain
wealth, meet an important individual, attain a high position, or experience a
particular future event.
Similarly, the
fact that the moon appeared during daylight does not establish that a secret
will be revealed or that an expected blessing will arrive soon.
The part of the
moon that fell into a toilet should also not automatically be interpreted as a
warning about unlawful wealth, sin, or a blessing becoming contaminated. Such a
conclusion would require evidence that is not established by the dream itself.
Therefore, there
is no sound basis for declaring that this dream predicts either a particular
blessing or an impending problem.
2.
Dreaming of Stars in Daylight
Stars are
mentioned in the Qur'an as part of Allah's creation and as signs that people
may reflect upon.
Allah says:
Arabic:
وَعَلَامَاتٍ ۚ وَبِالنَّجْمِ هُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ
Transliteration:
Wa ʿalāmātin
wa bin-najmi hum yahtadūn.
English
translation:
“And He has set up
landmarks, and by the stars they are guided.”
Reference: Qur'an 16:16.
This verse
describes guidance through signs in creation, but it does not provide a
specific interpretation of seeing stars in a dream.
Consequently,
seeing stars during daylight in a dream cannot reliably be taken as proof that
you will attain fame, meet prominent scholars, rise in status, or discover
hidden information.
You may reflect on
Allah's creation and use the experience as a reminder to strengthen your faith,
but it is important not to confuse personal reflection with an established
interpretation of the unseen.
3.
Dreaming of a Storm and Hearing the Rumbling of Water
The sound of a
storm or rumbling water can be striking in a dream. Nevertheless, there is no
established Islamic rule that such a sound necessarily signifies punishment,
future difficulties, protection from enemies, repayment of debts, or relief
from hardship.
Likewise, the
absence of fear in the dream does not prove that you possess a particular level
of faith or that Allah has granted you special protection from a specific
danger.
If you felt calm
during the dream, you need not become anxious about it. You can continue to
pray, seek Allah's protection, and place your trust in Him without assuming
that the dream predicts a particular event.
4.
Are the Three Dreams Connected?
Because the dreams
occurred within a few days of one another, you may wonder whether they form a
single message.
However, their
closeness in time does not establish that they are connected or that they
predict a major change in your life. Dreams can arise from different causes,
including a pleasant dream, a distressing dream, or thoughts and experiences
that occupy a person's mind.
The Prophet
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that dreams fall into
three categories: glad tidings from Allah, distressing dreams from Satan, and
dreams related to what occupies a person's thoughts.
Reference: Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2263; numbering may
vary by edition.
Without further
reliable evidence, it would be inappropriate to declare that these three dreams
announce forthcoming success, wealth, spiritual elevation, or a warning about
an unlawful matter.
5.
What Should You Do?
You do not need to
take any unusual action because of these dreams.
·
Continue observing your obligatory prayers and other acts of worship.
·
Ask Allah for guidance, goodness, protection, and beneficial knowledge.
·
Avoid making important financial, family, or personal decisions solely
on the basis of dreams.
·
If a dream troubles you, seek refuge in Allah and follow the guidance
taught by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
·
Do not allow speculative interpretations to create unnecessary fear or
unrealistic expectations.
Allah reminds us
that knowledge of the unseen belongs to Him alone:
Arabic:
قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
Transliteration:
Qul lā yaʿlamu
man fis-samāwāti wal-arḍil-ghayba illallāh.
English
translation:
“Say, ‘None in the
heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”
Reference: Qur'an 27:65.
Conclusion
Your dreams of a
bright full moon, stars appearing during daylight, and the rumbling sound of a
storm are vivid experiences. However, Islamic sources do not provide sufficient
evidence to assign definite predictions to these particular images.
There is no need
to assume that the dreams indicate impending success, danger, punishment, or a
special spiritual status. Continue worshipping Allah, seeking beneficial
knowledge, and living responsibly. If the dreams have left you peaceful, you
may simply move forward without worrying about their precise meaning.
