Dreaming of Ascending into the Clouds: An Islamic Perspective

Question

Assalamu Alaikum. May Allah reward you abundantly, Sheikh.

I had a dream in which I was ascending into the sky until I reached the clouds. Before I entered the clouds, they opened, revealing an extraordinary light. I then entered the clouds and looked at my body as though it were returning towards me.

Please, what is the interpretation of this dream in Islam?

Answer

Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

May Allah reward you with goodness, bless your life, and grant you peace of mind.

Dear sister, regarding your dream of ascending into the sky, entering the clouds, seeing an extraordinary light, and observing your body as though it were returning towards you, it is important to understand that we cannot establish the meaning of this dream or predict future events based solely on these images.

What Does Islam Say About Dreams?

In Islam, dreams can have different origins. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that dreams may include a good dream that brings glad tidings from Allah, a disturbing dream from Satan, or a dream arising from a person's thoughts and experiences.

Therefore, we should be cautious about assigning definite meanings to particular dream symbols without reliable Islamic evidence.

For example, we cannot confidently claim that:

·         Ascending into the sky necessarily signifies elevation in status.

·         Entering the clouds means that doors of prosperity are about to open.

·         Seeing a remarkable light proves that a person has attained a special spiritual rank.

·         Observing one's body as though it were returning signifies that the soul has left the body or that the person has experienced a particular spiritual event.

These interpretations cannot be established from the dream alone.

Allah says:

Arabic:

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Transliteration:

Qul lā yaʿlamu man fis-samāwāti wal-arḍil-ghayba illallāh.

English translation:

“Say, ‘None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”

— Qur’an 27:65

This verse reminds us that knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah. A dream should not be treated as certain knowledge of future events or a person's spiritual standing.

What Should You Do After Such a Dream?

If the dream brought you happiness and peace, you may thank Allah and ask Him to grant you goodness. You can also continue your regular acts of worship, supplication, and righteous deeds without assuming that the dream guarantees a particular blessing or status.

If the dream frightened or disturbed you, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us to seek refuge in Allah from Satan, lightly blow or spit to the left three times, and turn to the other side. These practices are reported in Sahih Muslim (2261).

Above all, do not allow the dream to cause unnecessary fear or lead you to make important life decisions based on an uncertain interpretation.

Conclusion

This dream does not necessarily indicate anything bad. However, we cannot definitively interpret it as a sign of elevation, prosperity, spiritual advancement, or an approaching event.

Take the dream calmly, place your trust in Allah, and continue asking Him for goodness and guidance.

May Allah make all that you experience a source of goodness, protect you from harm, and guide us all to what pleases Him.
