Ruling on Waking Up at Night and Finding Impurity on One’s Body in Islam

Question

Assalamu Alaikum. May Allah grant the Sheikh good health and a long life.

Please, I have a question. If a person wakes up during the night and discovers impurity on his body, then goes back to sleep but performs a ritual bath before praying, is his bath valid? May Allah reward you with goodness.

Answer

Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

Amin. May Allah reward you with goodness and grant us beneficial knowledge.

The answer depends on the substance the person finds on his body, because there is a difference between semen (maniy) and other forms of impurity.

1. If the Substance Is Semen

If a person wakes up and finds semen on his body or clothing, he must perform ghusl (the ritual bath) before praying.

He does not have to perform the bath immediately upon discovering the semen, provided he completes it in time to perform his prayer within its prescribed time. Therefore, he may return to sleep and perform ghusl later, before praying.

However, he should be careful not to miss the prayer. If he wishes to sleep while in a state of major ritual impurity (janābah), it is recommended to perform ablution (wudu) before sleeping.

It is reported from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her):

Arabic:

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ

English translation:

“When the Prophet ﷺ wished to sleep while in a state of janābah, he would perform ablution as he did for prayer.”

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

If the person subsequently performs ghusl correctly, intending to remove the state of major ritual impurity and ensuring that water reaches his entire body, his bath is valid, provided the applicable requirements of ghusl are fulfilled.

2. If the Substance Is Urine or Another Impurity

If the person finds urine or another impurity on his body or clothing, he does not have to perform ghusl for janābah merely because of that impurity.

Instead, he must wash the affected area of his body or clothing before praying. He should also perform wudu if required.

Washing away physical impurity and removing the state of major ritual impurity are two different matters. The appropriate purification depends on the circumstances.

3. If He Finds Semen After Waking Up

If a person wakes up and finds semen, ghusl is required even if he does not remember having a sexual dream.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked about someone who discovered fluid after waking from sleep. His guidance established that the person must perform ghusl when the relevant discharge is found.

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The ruling concerns finding the relevant discharge, not merely remembering a dream. If a person remembers a dream but finds no discharge, the ruling is different.

Conclusion

If someone wakes up at night and finds semen, returns to sleep, and then performs ghusl before praying, his ghusl is valid if he performs it correctly and fulfils its requirements.

However, if the substance is urine or another physical impurity, ghusl is not required merely to remove that impurity. He should wash the affected area and ensure that he has the purification required for prayer.

May Allah grant us understanding of our religion and enable us to worship Him correctly.
