Can a Dead Person Return to This World and Live Again?

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

A woman asks:

“I heard that there are people who die before their appointed time is supposedly complete, and that they can return to this world and continue living somewhere without people knowing who they really are. Is there anything like this in Islam?”

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

There is no authentic Islamic teaching that a person who has genuinely died can secretly return to this worldly life, take up life somewhere else and continue living without people knowing his identity.

In Islam, when a person's appointed time of death arrives, that decree cannot be postponed. Allah says:

Wa likulli ummatin ajal, fa-idhā jā'a ajaluhum lā yasta'khirūna sāʿatan wa lā yastaqdimūn.

“For every nation is an appointed term. When their time comes, they cannot delay it for a moment, nor can they advance it.”
— Qur’an 7:34

Therefore, the idea that someone dies before his “real time” has arrived and subsequently returns to complete the remainder of his worldly life is not an Islamic doctrine.

What Happens After Death?

Allah describes a barrier between this worldly life and the resurrection:

وَمِن وَرَائِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

Wa min warā’ihim barzakhun ilā yawmi yubʿathūn.

“And behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.”
— Qur’an 23:100

This is known as Barzakh—the state between death and resurrection.

The verse comes immediately after mentioning a person who asks to be returned to the world so that he can do righteous deeds. Allah makes clear that there is a barrier preventing such a return.

This is strong evidence against the idea that ordinary deceased people return to continue their worldly lives.

But Doesn't the Qur'an Mention People Being Brought Back to Life?

Yes. Allah has demonstrated His absolute power by bringing the dead back to life in certain extraordinary circumstances.

For example, Allah says concerning the man killed among the Children of Israel:

فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُحْيِي اللَّهُ الْمَوْتَىٰ

Fa-qulnā iḍribūhu bibaʿḍihā, kadhālika yuḥyī Allāhu al-mawtā.

“So We said, ‘Strike him with part of it.’ Thus Allah brings the dead to life.”
— Qur’an 2:73

Allah also mentions the miracle of Prophet ʿĪsā (Jesus), peace be upon him, who was able—by Allah's permission—to bring the dead back to life:

وَأُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

Wa uḥyī al-mawtā bi-idhni Allāh.

“And I give life to the dead by Allah's permission.”
— Qur’an 3:49

These are miracles granted by Allah, not evidence that deceased people ordinarily return to worldly life.

What About Reincarnation?

The idea that a person dies and then returns to the world by being born again as another person is commonly known as reincarnation.

This is not the Islamic understanding of human existence.

Islam teaches that a person has one worldly life, followed by death, Barzakh, resurrection and the Hereafter.

Allah says:

Thumma innakum baʿda dhālika lamayyitūn. Thumma innakum yawma al-qiyāmati tubʿathūn.

“Then, after that, you will surely die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will surely be resurrected.”
— Qur’an 23:15–16

This is the pattern presented in the Qur'an: worldly life → death → resurrection, not repeated worldly lives.

What If Someone Claims That a Dead Person Came Back?

Stories about people who supposedly died and later appeared somewhere else should not automatically be accepted as evidence of returning from the dead.

There may be many explanations for such stories, including mistaken identity, misinformation, misunderstanding about whether the person actually died, or stories that have been exaggerated over time.

A claim concerning the unseen should not be accepted merely because people repeat it.

Allah says:

Wa lā taqfu mā laysa laka bihi ʿilm.

“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge.”
— Qur’an 17:36

Conclusion

A person who genuinely dies does not ordinarily return to this world to continue living secretly in another place. Islam teaches that after death a person enters Barzakh and remains there until the Day of Resurrection.

Allah can bring the dead back to life as a miracle, as demonstrated in the Qur'an, but this does not establish a general rule that dead people return to worldly life.

Therefore, claims that people die before their supposed time and then secretly return to live elsewhere should not be presented as an Islamic belief without authentic evidence.
