QUESTION ❓
Assalamu
Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
A person asks
about two dreams:
1.
Dreaming of being bitten by a snake in water.
2.
A friend dreaming that his friend married the daughter
of a wealthy man.
What do these
dreams mean according to Islam?
ANSWER ❗️
Wa
Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
May Allah make
whatever is good in these dreams beneficial and protect us from every form of
harm.
Before
interpreting either dream, an important principle should be understood: Islam
does not provide a fixed meaning for every object or event that appears in a
dream.
Therefore, we
should not say with certainty that a snake always represents an enemy, that
water represents a particular type of difficulty, or that marrying a wealthy
person's daughter means future wealth.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ
الشَّيْطَانِ
Al-ru’yā
al-ṣāliḥatu min Allāh, wal-ḥulmu min al-shayṭān.
“A good
dream is from Allah, while a bad dream is from Satan.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6985; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2261
He also taught
that some dreams may arise from what a person has been thinking about while
awake.
Consequently,
dreams should not automatically be treated as predictions or messages about
specific people.
1. Dreaming of a Snake Biting Someone in Water
There is no
authentic text from the Qur’an or Sunnah establishing that a snake in a dream
necessarily means an enemy, jealousy, hidden plotting or impending harm.
Likewise, there is
no authentic Islamic rule stating that water in a dream represents a particular
type of trial or that a snake biting someone in water means that an enemy will
succeed in harming him.
Some traditional
dream-interpretation works contain symbolic interpretations of snakes, water
and other objects. However, such interpretations should not be presented as
established teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Should the Dreamer Become Suspicious of People?
No.
A person should
not begin accusing friends, relatives, business partners or neighbours of
plotting against him simply because he dreamed of a snake.
Allah says:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا
مِنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ
Yā ayyuhā
alladhīna āmanū ijtanibū kathīran mina al-ẓann, inna baʿḍa al-ẓanni ithm.
“O you who
believe, avoid much suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is sinful.”
— Qur’an 49:12
If the dream was
frightening, the Sunnah provides guidance on what to do rather than instructing
the dreamer to search for an enemy.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that when a person sees something
he dislikes in a dream, he should seek refuge in Allah from its evil and from
Satan, spit lightly to his left three times, and not tell people about it.
— Ṣaḥīḥ
al-Bukhārī 6985; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2261
Thus, there is no
need to panic or search for someone whom the dream supposedly identifies as an
enemy.
2. A Friend Dreaming That His Friend Married a Wealthy Man's
Daughter
The same principle
applies here.
There is no
authentic Islamic evidence that dreaming of marrying a wealthy person's
daughter means that the person will become wealthy, marry into a rich family,
obtain a particular job, or achieve a specific worldly opportunity.
The dream may be
pleasant, and the person may hope that Allah brings him goodness. But it cannot
be presented as a definite prediction.
The wealth of the
girl's father in the dream does not establish that wealth will come to the
person in real life.
Similarly, if the
person is unmarried, the dream does not prove that he will soon marry, nor does
it identify his future wife.
Can a Friend's Dream About Another Person Be Meaningful?
It is possible for
a person to dream about another individual, but we should not assume that such
a dream gives us certain knowledge about that person's future.
If the dream is
pleasant, the friend may simply make duʿā that Allah grants his friend goodness
and success.
However, important
decisions should be based on real circumstances rather than on the dream.
For example, if
the man is considering marriage, he should assess the actual person's religion,
character, compatibility and circumstances, rather than assuming that
a dream has revealed his future wife.
What Should Muslims Do With Pleasant Dreams?
If a person sees a
dream that makes him happy, he may thank Allah and hope for good.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that a good dream is from Allah and
that, when a person sees something he likes, he may tell someone he loves.
— Ṣaḥīḥ
al-Bukhārī 6985; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2261
But even a
pleasant dream should not be turned into certainty about the unseen.
Allah says:
قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
Qul lā
yaʿlamu man fī al-samāwāti wa al-arḍi al-ghayba illā Allāh.
“Say,
‘None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”
— Qur’an 27:65
Conclusion
The dream of a snake
biting someone in water has no fixed interpretation established by the
Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. It should not be used as evidence that an enemy is
secretly plotting against the dreamer.
Likewise, a friend
dreaming that someone marries the daughter of a wealthy man does not
prove that the person will marry into a wealthy family or receive future
wealth.
If a dream is
pleasant, one may hope for good and thank Allah. If it is frightening, one
should follow the Sunnah for dealing with disturbing dreams and avoid allowing
the dream to create fear, suspicion or accusations.
