INTRODUCTION
Since
its emergence in 1983, the internet has transformed many aspects of human life
across the world. Over the past several decades, digital technologies have
reshaped how people communicate, conduct business, access information, and
participate in social and political activities. The expansion of the internet
has therefore produced significant changes in societies globally, affecting
both economic practices and cultural expressions. These developments have also
had important implications for the Hausa language and the Hausa people.
In
contemporary society, the internet has increasingly become an essential
platform for carrying out a wide range of daily activities. Individuals and
institutions now rely on digital technologies in areas such as religion,
education, healthcare, governance, politics, and economic activities. As a
result, the digital environment has evolved into an important sphere of human
interaction that requires the presence and participation of different languages
and cultures, including Hausa.
One
of the most significant changes brought about by the internet concerns the
organization of economic activities. Many forms of earning and saving have
gradually shifted to digital platforms, leading to the emergence of various
online marketplaces and financial systems. Within these virtual spaces, people
engage in buying and selling in ways that closely resemble traditional physical
markets. Hausa people have increasingly begun to participate in these online
environments, taking part in commercial exchanges, digital services, and other
forms of economic activity. These developments also include the growing use of
digital financial tools, such as online banking systems, digital wallets, and
the management of digital currencies and other financial assets.
At
the same time, the global nature of labour has undergone considerable
transformation. The development of internet technologies has created
opportunities for many types of work to be performed remotely through digital
platforms. In this emerging digital economy, Hausa speakers are becoming
involved in various forms of online labour. These activities include product
promotion and display, research, brokerage and intermediation, photo and device
editing, trading in digital currencies and assets, internet and technology
services, language technology, and marketing and advertising.
These
changes mark a new phase in the development of global commerce and raise
important questions about how different communities can effectively participate
in the opportunities created by the digital economy. For Hausa people,
understanding these transformations is particularly important in order to
ensure that they are not excluded from emerging economic opportunities. Active
engagement with the digital world can enable Hausa communities to benefit from
new forms of income generation while strengthening their presence in global
economic networks.
Another
important dimension of the digital economy is its close relationship with
culture and language. Many forms of online work are directly connected to
cultural representation. Activities in language technology (such as
translation, transcription, and subtitle creation) play a crucial role in
ensuring that languages remain visible and functional in the digital sphere.
Similarly, tasks involving video and image editing, as well as the creation and
publication of digital content, serve not only as means of income generation
but also as platforms for expressing cultural identity. For this reason, the
participation of Hausa speakers in these areas is essential for ensuring that
Hausa language, culture, and traditions are adequately represented within the global
digital environment.
This
book examines the opportunities available to Hausa people in the areas of
earning and saving within the digital economy. It aims to provide a broad
understanding of how traditional economic practices among Hausa communities
relate to emerging digital opportunities. By exploring both historical
practices and contemporary developments, the book seeks to highlight ways in
which Hausa individuals and communities can effectively participate in the
evolving global economy while maintaining their linguistic and cultural
identity.
The
book is organized into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the subject
by examining traditional Hausa practices related to earning and saving. It
discusses the meanings, characteristics, and cultural significance of these
practices, while also considering how they have evolved in modern contexts.
The
second chapter focuses on issues related to income generation. It explores
occupations, trade, commerce, and other economic activities historically
practiced by Hausa communities and inherited from earlier generations. The
chapter also examines how these traditional forms of economic activity have
been influenced and reshaped by modern social and technological developments.
The
third chapter provides an overview of the internet, beginning with its
definition and proceeding to a discussion of its historical development and
expansion. It also analyzes the impact of the internet on the Hausa language
and the Hausa people, as well as the growing presence of Hausa users within
digital spaces.
The
fourth chapter examines various ways of earning income through the internet. It
discusses opportunities available to Hausa people in areas such as online
labour, digital marketing, brokerage services, and other activities related to
language technology, computing, and digital devices.
The
fifth chapter discusses saving practices associated with digital financial
systems. It explores different methods of storing and managing money through
online platforms, including bank accounts, digital wallets, and other financial
instruments such as digital assets and foreign currencies.
The
sixth and final chapter outlines practical steps for participating in online
earning and saving activities. It discusses the skills and resources required
for success in the digital economy, including computer literacy, professional
expertise in specific fields, and access to appropriate technological tools.
The chapter also highlights the benefits associated with digital economic
participation while addressing potential challenges that individuals may
encounter in the process of earning and saving online.
