Abstract
Nigeria is one of the
most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with over 500 indigenous
languages serving as primary means of communication among diverse ethnic
communities. Despite this linguistic richness, public health communication has
historically relied on English as the dominant medium for disseminating health
information, thereby limiting accessibility among populations with limited
English proficiency. Consequently, linguistic barriers continue to undermine
health literacy, public awareness, and equitable access to healthcare
information, particularly in rural and under-served communities. Against this
background, this study examines the role of indigenous languages as strategic
tools for enhancing public health communication in Nigeria. The study adopted a
qualitative research design and analysed twenty purposively selected public
health communication samples drawn from Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian
Pidgin. The samples were obtained from radio broadcasts, community
announcements, posters, SMS campaigns, social media messages, religious
gatherings, and public outreach programmes. Data were analysed through thematic
content analysis using Systemic Functional Linguistics, Sociolinguistic Theory,
and the Health Belief Model as analytical frameworks. The findings reveal that
indigenous-language communication significantly enhances health literacy,
improves message comprehension, strengthens trust between health communicators
and communities, and promotes positive health behaviours. Furthermore,
culturally embedded expressions, proverbs, and familiar linguistic structures
increase audience engagement and facilitate the translation of biomedical
information into locally meaningful knowledge. The study also found that
indigenous-language communication encourages community participation and
contributes to more inclusive healthcare delivery. The study concludes that
indigenous languages are indispensable resources for achieving effective,
culturally responsive, and sustainable public health communication in
multilingual societies. It therefore recommends the institutionalization of
multilingual health communication policies and the expansion of
indigenous-language health campaigns across traditional and digital
communication platforms.

1.0 Introduction
Language occupies a
central position in public health communication because it shapes how health
information is produced, disseminated, interpreted, and applied within society.
Effective health communication depends not only on the availability of accurate
information but also on the ability of target audiences to understand and
utilize such information in making informed health decisions. Consequently,
language accessibility has emerged as a critical determinant of health
literacy, healthcare participation, and behavioural compliance. According to
the World Health Organization (2023), health communication strategies achieve
greater effectiveness when they are linguistically accessible and culturally
appropriate. Similarly, Nutbeam (2021) argues that health literacy is closely
associated with individuals’ capacity to obtain, comprehend, evaluate, and
apply health information within their social contexts. Therefore, language
remains a fundamental factor influencing public health outcomes across diverse
populations.
Nigeria provides a
particularly significant context for examining the relationship between
language and public health communication. As one of the most linguistically
diverse nations in the world, the country is home to over 500 indigenous
languages spoken across numerous ethnic and cultural communities (Eberhard,
Simons, & Fennig 2024). These languages function as important vehicles of
communication, cultural identity, and social interaction. Nevertheless, despite
this linguistic diversity, public health communication in Nigeria continues to
rely predominantly on English, the country's official language. While English
facilitates communication at national and institutional levels, its dominance
often limits access to health information among populations with limited
proficiency, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Consequently,
linguistic barriers continue to contribute to disparities in health literacy,
healthcare access, and health-related decision-making.
Furthermore, the
limitations of English-dominated communication became particularly evident
during major public health emergencies such as the Ebola outbreak and the
COVID-19 pandemic. During these crises, large volumes of health information
were disseminated through conventional and digital media platforms. However,
many communities encountered difficulties interpreting technical health
messages communicated primarily in English. According to the World Health
Organization (2020), ineffective communication can undermine compliance with
health interventions and increase susceptibility to misinformation. Likewise,
UNESCO (2023) emphasizes that multilingual communication is essential for
ensuring equitable access to information in culturally diverse societies. These
observations suggest that language choice remains a crucial factor in
determining the effectiveness of public health interventions.
Beyond improving
accessibility, indigenous languages possess unique sociocultural resources that
enhance communication effectiveness. Proverbs, storytelling traditions,
idiomatic expressions, songs, and culturally familiar metaphors provide
meaningful frameworks through which complex health concepts can be
communicated. Bamgbose (2014) contends that indigenous languages function not
only as communication systems but also as repositories of cultural knowledge
and collective experience. Consequently, health information communicated
through indigenous languages is more likely to resonate with local audiences
because it reflects their cultural realities and everyday experiences. This
cultural alignment enhances message relevance, strengthens audience engagement,
and promotes greater acceptance of health interventions.
Recent scholarship has
increasingly highlighted the strategic value of indigenous languages in
healthcare communication. Babalola (2025) observes that communication conducted
in patients’ indigenous languages improves understanding, treatment adherence, and
healthcare outcomes. Similarly, Chiweta-Oduah (2025) found that linguistically
accessible communication significantly enhances health literacy and healthcare
participation among rural populations in Nigeria. In the same vein, Onyenankeya
(2025) reported that indigenous-language media programmes improved public
understanding of health information and encouraged behavioural change among
rural audiences. Beyond traditional communication channels, Mhlanga & Moloi
(2023) demonstrated that local-language digital communication enhances public
engagement and improves access to healthcare information. Collectively, these
studies indicate that indigenous languages remain important resources for
effective health communication in both traditional and digital environments.
Despite growing
scholarly interest in language and health communication, important gaps remain
within existing research. Most previous studies focus on specific diseases,
individual linguistic communities, or isolated communication platforms.
Furthermore, limited attention has been devoted to examining how indigenous
languages simultaneously influence health literacy, message comprehension,
trust, community participation, and behavioural outcomes across multiple
communication contexts. Equally important, few studies have integrated
linguistic, sociocultural, and behavioural perspectives within a unified
analytical framework. Consequently, a comprehensive investigation of indigenous
languages as strategic tools for public health communication remains necessary.
Against this background,
this study examines the role of indigenous languages in enhancing public health
communication in Nigeria. Specifically, the study investigates how
indigenous-language communication contributes to health literacy, message
comprehension, trust-building, community engagement, and behavioural change. By
integrating Systemic Functional Linguistics, Sociolinguistic Theory, and the
Health Belief Model, the study provides a multidisciplinary explanation of how
indigenous languages facilitate effective public health communication in
multilingual societies. In doing so, the study contributes to ongoing
discussions on language accessibility, health equity, and culturally responsive
healthcare delivery in Africa and beyond.
1.1 Literature Review
Language remains a
fundamental determinant of effective public health communication because it
influences how health information is accessed, interpreted, and utilized by
individuals and communities. According to Nutbeam (2021), health literacy
extends beyond the ability to read health-related materials to include the
capacity to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply health information for
informed decision-making. Similarly, Sørensen, Broucke, Fullam, Doyle, Pelikan,
Slonska, & Brand (2024) argue that health literacy encompasses cognitive,
social, and communicative competencies that enable individuals to navigate
healthcare systems effectively. From this perspective, language serves as a
critical factor influencing the extent to which people can benefit from health
information and healthcare services. Closely related to this argument, Schiavo
(2014) conceptualizes public health communication as a strategic process
designed to influence health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours through
audience-centred communication. Likewise, Kreps (2025) maintains that the
effectiveness of health communication depends largely on cultural relevance and
linguistic accessibility. Consequently, health messages are more likely to
achieve desired outcomes when they are communicated in languages that audiences
understand and identify with culturally.
Furthermore, UNESCO
(2023) emphasizes that indigenous languages promote social inclusion by
facilitating access to information among marginalized populations. Similarly,
Bamgbose (2014) contends that indigenous languages function not only as
communication tools but also as repositories of cultural knowledge and
identity. In the Nigerian context, where over 500 indigenous languages coexist
(Eberhard, Simons, & Fennig (2024), language accessibility becomes
particularly important for ensuring equitable access to health information.
Therefore, indigenous languages provide valuable resources for enhancing health
literacy and improving communication effectiveness.
Recent scholarship has
further reinforced this position. Babalola (2025) argues that the use of
indigenous languages during healthcare interactions improves patient
satisfaction, treatment adherence, and healthcare outcomes by reducing
communication barriers between healthcare providers and patients. Similarly,
Chiweta-Oduah (2025) found that culturally and linguistically accessible
communication significantly enhances health literacy practices among rural
populations in Nigeria. According to the study, individuals exposed to health
information through familiar languages demonstrated higher levels of
comprehension and engagement than those receiving information solely through
English. These findings underscore the importance of language accessibility in
contemporary public health communication.
Moreover, emerging
studies highlight the growing relevance of indigenous languages within digital
communication environments. Mhlanga & Moloi (2023) observed that
local-language digital campaigns improved public engagement with health
information and increased access to healthcare knowledge among underserved
communities. Likewise, Onyenankeya (2025) found that indigenous-language radio
programmes enhanced health literacy and behavioural change by presenting health
information through culturally meaningful communication strategies.
Consequently, indigenous languages remain central to both traditional and
digital health communication systems.
2.0 Theoretical
Framework
This study is anchored
on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Sociolinguistic Theory, and the
Health Belief Model (HBM). The integration of these frameworks provides
linguistic, sociocultural, and behavioural perspectives for understanding how
indigenous languages function as strategic tools in public health
communication. Collectively, the theories explain how health messages are
constructed, interpreted, and translated into behavioural outcomes within
multilingual societies.
Systemic Functional
Linguistics, developed by Halliday (1994), conceptualizes language as a social
semiotic system through which meaning is created and exchanged. According to
Halliday, language performs three interconnected metafunctions: ideational, interpersonal,
and textual. The ideational function enables individuals to represent
experiences and realities, the interpersonal function facilitates social
interaction and relationship-building, while the textual function organizes
messages into coherent and meaningful forms. Consequently, SFL provides a
useful framework for examining how indigenous-language health messages
communicate information, establish trust, and facilitate understanding among
audiences.
Closely related to this
perspective is Sociolinguistic Theory, which emphasizes the relationship
between language, society, culture, and identity. Fishman (1972) argues that
language functions as a marker of social belonging and cultural affiliation.
Similarly, Wardhaugh & Fuller (2021) maintain that language choices are
shaped by social relationships, cultural norms, and communicative contexts.
Therefore, individuals are more likely to trust and respond positively to
messages communicated in languages that reflect their social realities and
cultural experiences. This perspective is particularly relevant to public
health communication in multilingual societies such as Nigeria.
Complementing these
perspectives is the Health Belief Model, originally developed by Rosenstock
(1988) and later expanded by health behaviour scholars. The model explains
health behaviour in terms of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity,
perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, and self-efficacy
(Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015). According to the model, individuals are
more likely to adopt preventive health behaviours when they perceive a health
threat as serious and believe that recommended actions will produce positive
outcomes. Consequently, indigenous-language communication may enhance
behavioural compliance by increasing comprehension and reducing uncertainty
associated with health information.
Taken together, these
theories provide a comprehensive framework for analysing indigenous-language
public health communication. While SFL explains how linguistic choices
facilitate meaning-making, Sociolinguistic Theory highlights the influence of
culture, identity, and trust on communication effectiveness, and the Health
Belief Model explains how communication influences behavioural outcomes.
3.0 Critical Review of
Previous Studies
Empirical studies have
consistently demonstrated that indigenous languages contribute significantly to
effective health communication, health literacy, and behavioural change.
However, scholars have approached the subject from different perspectives, emphasizing
comprehension, healthcare access, media effectiveness, and community
participation.
Within the Nigerian
context, Ben-Enukora (2021) found that Yoruba-language radio jingles improved
awareness and preventive practices relating to Lassa fever among women in Ondo
State. Similarly, Olajuyin, Olatunya, Olajide, Olajuyin, Olajuyin, Ogunboyo, &Oluwadiya
(2022) reported that the use of indigenous languages during clinical
interactions enhanced communication between healthcare providers and patients
by reducing misunderstanding and encouraging greater patient participation.
While these studies highlight the importance of language accessibility, their
focus on specific populations limits the broader applicability of their
findings.
Likewise, Okpongkpong,
Ekhareafo, &Asemah, (2024) demonstrated that Yoruba-language risk
communication interventions significantly improved kidney disease awareness in
Ogun State. In a related study, Adesina, Akinwale, & Adeyemi, (2025) found
that indigenous-language health information positively influenced knowledge,
attitudes, and preventive practices regarding Type 2 diabetes among youths in
Southwestern Nigeria. Collectively, these studies suggest that indigenous-language
communication enhances both health awareness and behavioural compliance.
Nevertheless, their concentration on specific diseases provides limited insight
into the broader role of indigenous languages across diverse public health
contexts.
From a media
perspective, Owolabi & Nurudeen (2020) argued that indigenous-language
media remain effective channels for disseminating health information to
grassroots populations because they enhance accessibility and audience
engagement. Similarly, Onyenankeya (2025) reported that indigenous-language
radio broadcasting improved health literacy and behavioural change among rural
populations. According to the study, local-language communication encouraged
greater participation in health programmes by making health information more
understandable and culturally relevant.
Beyond Nigeria, similar
conclusions have emerged from other multilingual societies. Maseko & Ndlovu
(2023) found that indigenous-language communication strengthened community
participation in health interventions across Southern Africa by enhancing cultural
relevance and public trust. Likewise, Mhlanga & Moloi (2023) observed that
local-language digital campaigns improved access to health information and
increased audience engagement. From a broader international perspective,
Whalen, Moss, &Baldwin (2022) argued that indigenous-language use promotes
social inclusion, cultural identity, and health participation, thereby
contributing to improved well-being.
Furthermore, Babalola
(2025) demonstrated that healthcare delivery becomes more effective when
communication is conducted in languages familiar to patients. Similarly,
Chiweta-Oduah (2025) found that culturally appropriate and linguistically
accessible communication significantly influences health literacy and
healthcare participation among rural populations. These studies collectively
reinforce the argument that indigenous-language communication enhances
comprehension, trust, participation, and behavioural outcomes.
4.0 Research Gap
A synthesis of the
reviewed literature reveals broad scholarly consensus regarding the
effectiveness of indigenous-language communication in improving health
literacy, comprehension, trust, participation, and behavioural compliance.
While Nigerian studies primarily emphasize disease awareness and healthcare
utilization, international studies highlight the broader sociocultural and
participatory dimensions of indigenous-language communication. Nevertheless,
existing evidence remains fragmented across diseases, linguistic communities,
and communication platforms.
Furthermore, most
studies examine communication outcomes from either linguistic, media, or public
health perspectives without integrating these dimensions within a unified
analytical framework. Consequently, limited attention has been devoted to
understanding how linguistic, sociocultural, and behavioural factors interact
to influence public health outcomes across diverse communication environments.
In addition, relatively few studies have examined multiple indigenous languages
simultaneously across both traditional and digital communication platforms.
Addressing these
limitations, the present study investigates public health communication samples
drawn from Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin across multiple
communication environments, including radio broadcasts, community
announcements, SMS campaigns, social media messages, religious gatherings, and
public outreach programmes. Furthermore, by integrating Systemic Functional
Linguistics, Sociolinguistic Theory, and the Health Belief Model, the study
provides a comprehensive explanation of how indigenous languages enhance health
literacy, strengthen trust, encourage community participation, and promote
positive health behaviours in Nigeria.
5.0 Methodology
This study adopted a
qualitative research design to investigate the strategic role of indigenous
languages in public health communication in Nigeria. A qualitative approach was
considered appropriate because the study sought to examine linguistic meanings,
cultural representations, communicative practices, and behavioural implications
embedded in indigenous-language health messages rather than generate
statistical measurements. More specifically, the design enabled an in-depth
exploration of how language functions as a tool for health literacy, community
engagement, and behavioural change within multilingual contexts.
The twenty samples were
purposively selected from indigenous-language public health communication
materials disseminated through community radio programmes, vaccination
campaigns, health outreach activities, public service announcements, posters,
SMS campaigns, WhatsApp messages, hospital awareness programmes, and community
mobilization activities in Nigeria. The samples were chosen because they
represent common public health messages aimed at promoting disease prevention,
health literacy, healthcare-seeking behaviour, environmental sanitation, and
community well-being among speakers of Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin.
This balanced distribution enabled a comparative examination of how indigenous
languages function as strategic tools for public health communication in
multilingual Nigerian communities.
Following data
collection, the messages were transcribed and translated into English where
necessary to facilitate analysis and comparison. Thereafter, the data were
coded according to language, health theme, communication platform, audience
orientation, and communicative purpose. The coded data were subsequently
organized into thematic categories and analysed using thematic content
analysis.
Furthermore, the
analysis was guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Sociolinguistic
Theory, and the Health Belief Model (HBM). SFL facilitated the examination of
ideational, interpersonal, and textual meanings embedded in the messages.
Sociolinguistic Theory provided insights into issues of identity, culture,
trust, and audience engagement, while the Health Belief Model enabled the
analysis of behavioural dimensions such as perceived susceptibility, perceived
severity, perceived benefits, and cues to action. The integration of these
frameworks provided a multidimensional understanding of how indigenous
languages enhance public health communication in Nigeria.

Critical Analysis of
Indigenous-Language Public Health Communication Samples
The twenty
indigenous-language public health communication samples analysed in this study
demonstrate the strategic role of language in promoting health literacy,
behavioural change, and community participation. Drawn from Hausa, Yoruba,
Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin, the messages address hygiene, immunization,
healthcare-seeking behaviour, environmental sanitation, and health awareness.
6.0 Discussion of
Findings
6.1 Health Literacy and
Message Comprehension
The findings of this
study demonstrate that indigenous languages play a significant role in
enhancing health literacy and improving the comprehension of public health
information. Analysis of the data revealed that messages communicated in
indigenous languages were characterized by linguistic simplicity, cultural
familiarity, and contextual relevance. For example, Sample 1, “Wanke hannu da
sabulukafincinabinciyanahanakamuwa da cututtuka” (Wash your hands with soap
before eating to prevent diseases), Sample 6, “Máa fi omiàtiọṣẹfọọwọ́
kíàrùnmábàatàn” (Wash your hands with soap so disease will not spread), Sample
11, “Sachaa aka gịnanchatupuirinri ka ọrịagharaịbịa” (Wash your hands with soap
before eating to prevent disease), and Sample 16, “Wash your hand well with
soap before you chop” (Wash your hands well with soap before eating),
communicate preventive health information through simple and familiar
linguistic forms. Similarly, Samples 4, 14, and 19 promote clean water
consumption using culturally intelligible expressions.
From the perspective of
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), these messages perform the ideational
function by representing health realities in forms that are meaningful to local
audiences. Consequently, complex biomedical concepts are transformed into
practical knowledge that can be readily understood and applied. This finding
corroborates the work of Olajuyin et al. (2022), who found that
indigenous-language communication improved interactions between healthcare
providers and patients. Likewise, Okpongkpong et al. (2024) reported that
Yoruba-language health campaigns enhanced public awareness and understanding of
kidney disease. Similarly, Babalola (2025) observed that language accessibility
significantly improves health literacy among underserved populations in
Nigeria.
6.2 Promotion of
Preventive Health Behaviour
Furthermore, the
findings indicate that indigenous-language communication contributes
significantly to the promotion of preventive health behaviour. Messages such as
Samples 2, 7, 12, and 17 emphasize the protective benefits of vaccination,
while Samples 3, 8, 13, and 18 encourage timely healthcare-seeking behaviour.
Viewed through the lens of the Health Belief Model (HBM), these messages
reinforce perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and
cues to action. As a result, audiences are encouraged to adopt preventive
health practices and make informed healthcare decisions.
This finding aligns with
Adesina, Akinwale & Adeyemi (2025), who found that indigenous-language
health information positively influenced health knowledge and preventive
practices among Nigerian youths. Similarly, Onyenankeya (2025) reported that
indigenous-language radio programmes improved health literacy and promoted
behavioural change among rural populations. In the same vein, Owolabi & Nurudeen
(2020) found that Hausa-language COVID-19 campaigns significantly increased
vaccine acceptance and compliance with public health guidelines in Northern
Nigeria. These studies collectively support the argument that
indigenous-language communication enhances behavioural outcomes by making
health information more accessible and persuasive.
6.3 Trust, Cultural
Identity, and Community Engagement
Equally important, the
study reveals that indigenous languages strengthen trust, cultural identity,
and community engagement. This is evident in Sample 5, “Lafiya ta fi dukiya”
(Health is better than wealth), Sample 10, “Ìleradárajuwúràlọ” (Health is more
valuable than gold), Sample 15, “Ahụike ka akụ” (Good health is wealth), and
Sample 20, “Health na wealth” (Health is wealth). These culturally embedded
expressions draw upon shared values and collective experiences, thereby
enhancing message credibility and acceptance. This observation is consistent
with Sociolinguistic Theory, which emphasizes the relationship between
language, culture, identity, and social interaction.
In support of this
position, Whalen et al. (2022) found that indigenous-language communication
promotes social inclusion and strengthens community participation by
reinforcing cultural identity. Similarly, Maseko & Ndlovu (2023) reported
that indigenous-language communication increased community participation in
health interventions across Southern Africa. Moreover, Owolabi, & Nurudeen
(2020) observed that culturally grounded health messages generated higher
levels of audience trust and engagement than messages delivered solely in
official languages.
6.4 Environmental Health
Awareness and Disease Prevention
Another important
finding relates to environmental health awareness and disease prevention.

health outcomes. Consequently, these messages encourage healthier sanitation
behaviours and responsible environmental practices. This finding supports
Mhlanga & Moloi (2023), who found that indigenous-language health campaigns
improved public participation in sanitation and disease-prevention initiatives.
Likewise, the World Health Organization (2023) emphasizes that culturally and
linguistically adapted health communication enhances community engagement and
strengthens preventive health behaviours.
7.0 Synthesis of
Findings and Theoretical Implications
Taken together, the
findings affirm the complementary relevance of Systemic Functional Linguistics,
Sociolinguistic Theory, and the Health Belief Model in explaining the
effectiveness of indigenous-language public health communication. While SFL
explains how linguistic choices facilitate comprehension and meaning-making,
Sociolinguistic Theory highlights the influence of language on identity, trust,
and social participation. Similarly, the Health Belief Model explains how
culturally meaningful messages shape perceptions of risk and motivate
behavioural change. Therefore, the study demonstrates that indigenous languages
are not merely channels of communication but strategic resources for improving
health literacy, fostering community engagement, strengthening trust, and
promoting sustainable public health outcomes in multilingual societies such as
Nigeria.
7.1 Implications for
Public Health Communication
The findings of this
study carry important implications for public health communication policy and
practice. Specifically, they suggest that language should be treated as a
strategic component of healthcare delivery rather than merely a medium of
translation. Government agencies, healthcare institutions, development
organizations, and media practitioners should therefore institutionalize the
use of indigenous languages in health campaigns, public awareness programmes,
and healthcare outreach initiatives.
Furthermore, the
integration of indigenous languages into both traditional and digital
communication platforms can improve health literacy, reduce misinformation,
strengthen public trust, and promote equitable access to health information.
More importantly, culturally and linguistically inclusive communication
strategies can enhance community participation and improve the effectiveness of
health interventions among diverse populations. Consequently, the findings
support ongoing calls for multilingual public health communication frameworks
capable of addressing communication inequalities in multilingual societies such
as Nigeria.
8.0 Conclusion
This study examined the
role of indigenous languages as strategic tools for public health communication
in Nigeria. The findings reveal that indigenous-language communication enhances
health literacy, improves message comprehension, strengthens trust, and
promotes positive health behaviours among diverse linguistic communities. By
communicating health information through culturally familiar expressions and
accessible linguistic structures, indigenous languages increase audience
engagement and facilitate the effective dissemination of public health
messages.
Furthermore, the study
demonstrates that Systemic Functional Linguistics, Sociolinguistic Theory, and
the Health Belief Model collectively explain how indigenous-language
communication supports meaning-making, reinforces cultural identity, and
encourages behavioural change. Although challenges relating to dialectal
variation, language standardization, and translation persist, the benefits of
indigenous-language communication outweigh these limitations. Therefore, the
study concludes that indigenous languages are indispensable resources for
achieving inclusive, culturally responsive, and sustainable public health
communication in Nigeria and should be integrated more effectively into health
communication policies and interventions.
8.1 Contribution to
Knowledge
This study contributes
to scholarship by demonstrating that indigenous languages function not only as
channels of communication but also as strategic resources for improving health
literacy, strengthening trust, and promoting positive health behaviours. By
integrating Systemic Functional Linguistics, Sociolinguistic Theory, and the
Health Belief Model, the study provides a multidisciplinary explanation of how
indigenous-language communication enhances public health outcomes. Furthermore,
it extends existing research by examining Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian
Pidgin across both traditional and digital communication platforms. The
findings offer practical insights for policymakers, health communicators, and
researchers seeking to develop inclusive and culturally responsive public
health communication strategies.
9. Recommendations
Based on the findings of
this study, the following recommendations are proposed:
1. Government health
agencies should institutionalize the use of indigenous languages in public
health campaigns to improve access to health information among linguistically
diverse populations.
2. Healthcare professionals
and health communicators should receive regular training in indigenous-language
communication and culturally sensitive message design to enhance audience
engagement and communication effectiveness.
3. Linguists, translators,
and healthcare experts should collaborate to develop standardized medical and
public health terminologies in major Nigerian indigenous languages to ensure
consistency and accuracy in health communication.
4. Community stakeholders,
including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local organizations,
should be actively involved in disseminating health information to strengthen
public trust and encourage community participation in health interventions.
5. Public health
institutions should integrate indigenous languages into traditional and digital
media platforms, including radio, television, SMS, WhatsApp, and social media,
to expand the reach and effectiveness of health communication programmes.
