QUESTION ❓
Assalamu ‘alaikum, Sheikh.
What is the Islamic ruling on touching a dog? If a dog touches a person's clothes, are those clothes still valid for prayer?
ANSWER
❗️
Wa ‘alaikumus-salam wa rahmatullahi
wa barakatuh.
The Islamic ruling concerning dogs
requires some important distinctions. A Muslim should understand the ruling
concerning a dog's saliva, the general physical contact with a dog, and
situations in which impurity is actually transferred.
The
Ruling Concerning a Dog's Saliva
There is an authentic hadith in
which the Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِذَا
وَلَغَ الْكَلْبُ فِي إِنَاءِ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَغْسِلْهُ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ،
إِحْدَاهُنَّ بِالتُّرَابِ»
“If a dog drinks from the vessel of
any one of you, let him wash it seven times, one of them with soil.”
Sahih Muslim, 279.
A similar narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, 172.
This hadith establishes a specific
purification requirement for a vessel from which a dog has drunk.
The scholars have differed
concerning whether this ruling applies to all parts of the dog or
specifically to its saliva and what it contaminates. Therefore, it is better
not to state without qualification that every part of a dog is necessarily
impure according to all scholars.
What
If a Dog Touches Your Clothes?
Simply being touched by a dog does not
automatically mean that the clothes must be washed seven times.
The important question is whether actual
impurity has been transferred.
For example:
- If a dog touches dry clothes with a dry body and there
is no visible or known transfer of impurity, there is no need to assume
that the clothes have become impure.
- If the dog's saliva or another recognised impurity gets
onto the clothes, the affected area should be purified.
- If there is uncertainty and no evidence that impurity
was transferred, a person should not allow mere doubt to make him regard
his clothes as impure.
This is consistent with the general
legal principle that certainty is not removed by mere doubt.
Can
One Pray in Clothes That a Dog Has Touched?
Yes, if there is no actual
impurity on the clothes.
A person should not abandon his
prayer simply because a dog brushed against his clothing.
If, however, the dog's saliva or
another impurity has actually contaminated the clothing, it should be washed
before praying in it.
The specific seven-wash ruling
established in the hadith concerns a vessel licked by a dog. Scholars have
differed regarding how broadly that purification method applies to other
objects, including clothing. Therefore, it is preferable to distinguish the
clear text concerning vessels from areas where scholars have differed.
Should
Muslims Keep Dogs as Pets?
Islam permits keeping dogs for
recognised needs, such as hunting, guarding livestock, and protecting
property, subject to the relevant Islamic rulings.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَنِ
اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا، إِلَّا كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ صَيْدٍ أَوْ زَرْعٍ، انْتَقَصَ
مِنْ أَجْرِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ»
“Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog
for livestock, hunting or farming, his reward decreases by one qirāt every
day.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, 2322; Sahih
Muslim, 1574.
Other authentic narrations mention two
qirāts, and scholars have discussed the different narrations.
This indicates that keeping dogs
without a recognised need is discouraged, while keeping them for legitimate
purposes is permitted.
What
Is a Qirāt?
A qirāt in this context
refers to a substantial portion or measure of reward. The exact magnitude is
known to Allah.
Therefore, the hadith should not be
reduced to merely saying that someone loses an ordinary or insignificant amount
of reward.
What
About Touching or Playing with a Dog?
A person should avoid unnecessary
physical contact with dogs, particularly where doing so may expose him to
saliva or other impurities.
However, mere physical contact
does not automatically make a person's body or clothing impure. If impurity
is actually transferred, the affected area should be purified.
This distinction is important
because Islam does not command people to treat every uncertain contact as
certain impurity.
What
If the Dog Is Wet?
If a wet dog touches a person's
clothes or body, the possibility of impurity being transferred is greater. If
the person knows that saliva or another impurity has actually reached the
clothing or body, it should be washed.
However, even here, one should
distinguish between known contamination and mere suspicion.
Conclusion
A Muslim should take the rulings
concerning dogs seriously, but should also avoid unnecessary hardship and
excessive doubt.
If a dog merely touches a person's
dry clothes and there is no evidence that impurity has been transferred,
the clothes do not automatically become impure, and the person may pray in
them.
If the dog's saliva or another
recognised impurity actually reaches the clothes, the affected area should be
purified before prayer. The specific seven-wash ruling is explicitly
established for a vessel licked by a dog, while scholars have differed over extending
that exact procedure to other objects.
Therefore, the answer to the
question is:
A dog touching your clothes does not
by itself make the clothes invalid for prayer. What matters is whether impurity
has actually been transferred to them.
