QUESTION
Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi
wabarakatuh.
Please, Malam, I would like you to explain the authentic evidence concerning the virtue of sending blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, particularly on Friday.
ANSWER
Wa alaikumus salam warahmatullahi
wabarakatuh.
Sending ṣalāh and salām upon the
Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a great act of
worship. Allah Himself commands the believers to do so, and the Sunnah explains
some of its tremendous rewards.
Allah
Commands Believers to Send Blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
Allah says:
Qur'an
33:56
Transliteration:
Inna Allāha wa malā'ikatahu yuṣallūna ʿala an-nabiyy. Yā ayyuhā alladhīna
āmanū ṣallū ʿalayhi wa sallimū taslīmā.
English translation:
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who
believe, invoke blessings upon him and greet him with peace.”
Reference:
Qur'an 33:56.
This verse demonstrates the
exceptional status of the Prophet ﷺ
and the importance of ṣalāh and salām upon him.
One
Ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ Brings Ten from Allah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Transliteration:
Man ṣallā ʿalayya wāḥidatan ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi ʿashran.
English translation:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him
tenfold.”
Reference:
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1296; the hadith is graded authentic.
Another authentic narration gives
even more detail:
Transliteration:
Man ṣallā ʿalayya ṣalātan wāḥidatan ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi ʿashra ṣalawāt, wa
ḥuṭṭat ʿanhu ʿashru khaṭī'āt, wa rufiʿat lahu ʿashru darajāt.
English translation:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him
tenfold, ten of his sins will be erased, and he will be raised ten degrees.”
Reference:
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1297.
This is a remarkable reward: a
single act of ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ
brings ten blessings from Allah, the removal of ten sins, and an elevation of
ten degrees.
The
Special Virtue of Friday
Friday has a special status in
Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said:
Transliteration:
Inna min afḍali ayyāmikum yawmal-jumuʿah, fa-akthirū ʿalayya minaṣ-ṣalāti
fīhi, fa-inna ṣalātakum maʿrūḍatun ʿalayya.
English translation:
“Indeed, among the best of your days is Friday, so send abundant blessings upon
me on that day, for your blessings will be presented to me.”
Reference:
Sunan Abi Dawud 1047; graded authentic by al-Albani.
This hadith provides specific
evidence for increasing ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ
on Friday.
The Prophet ﷺ also described Friday as one of the most excellent days, making
it a particularly appropriate time for increased remembrance and other acts of
worship.
What
About Thursday Night?
The wording of some narrations
encourages sending abundant ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ
on Friday and the eve of Friday. However, the strongest and clearest authentic
evidence is the narration in Sunan Abi Dawud specifically stating that
believers should increase their ṣalāh upon him on Friday.
Therefore, a Muslim may certainly
begin increasing ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ
from Thursday evening and continue throughout Friday, while avoiding the claim
that every particular wording circulated about Thursday night has the same
level of authenticity.
How
Should We Send Ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ?
There are several authentic forms of
ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ. One well-known form
is the Ṣalāt al-Ibrāhīmiyyah, which the Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions.
For example:
Transliteration:
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā āli
Ibrāhīm, wa bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā āli
Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd.
English translation:
“O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as
You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim; and bless Muhammad and the
family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are
Praiseworthy, Glorious.”
Reference:
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1287.
Shorter forms such as “Ṣallallāhu
ʿalayhi wa sallam” are also commonly used when mentioning the Prophet ﷺ.
A
Beautiful Friday Practice
Friday should therefore be an
opportunity to increase our connection with Allah and His Messenger ﷺ through acts of worship.
Among the beneficial practices are:
- Increasing ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ.
- Making abundant duʿā'.
- Remembering Allah.
- Reading the Qur'an.
- Attending the Friday prayer.
- Listening attentively to the khutbah.
- Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ whenever his name is mentioned.
The purpose is not merely to repeat
words, but to express love, respect and adherence to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Conclusion
Sending ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ is a highly virtuous act throughout the
week, but Friday has a specific recommendation to increase it.
A single ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ carries tremendous reward: Allah sends ten
blessings upon the person, ten sins are erased, and ten degrees are raised.
Therefore, let us make Friday a day
in which our tongues remain moist with ṣalāh and salām upon the Messenger of
Allah ﷺ.
May Allah make us among those who
sincerely love and follow His Messenger ﷺ,
increase our blessings through our remembrance of him, and gather us with him
in Jannatul Firdaus.
