The Ruling on Men and Women Standing in the Same Prayer Row

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

What is the Islamic ruling concerning men and women standing in the same row during congregational prayer? Can women stand in the middle of men, or should they stand behind them?

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

If the question concerns congregational prayer in which both men and women are present, the established arrangement in the Sunnah is for the men to stand in front and the women to stand behind them.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Khayru ṣufūfi al-rijāli awwaluhā wa sharruhā ākhiruhā, wa khayru ṣufūfi al-nisā’i ākhiruhā wa sharruhā awwaluhā.

“The best rows for men are the first rows and the worst are the last, while the best rows for women are the last rows and the worst are the first.”

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 440

This indicates the arrangement prescribed by the Sunnah when men and women pray together: men are in front, while women are behind them.

Can a Woman Stand Directly Beside a Man?

In the normal arrangement of congregational prayer, a woman does not stand in the same row alongside unrelated men. Rather, the women's rows are behind the men's rows.

This arrangement should not be understood as implying that women are inferior to men. It is simply the arrangement prescribed for congregational prayer and is part of the etiquette of the prayer.

What If the Imam Is a Man and Only One Woman Is Praying Behind Him?

If a man is leading one woman in prayer, the woman stands behind him, rather than beside him.

This is based on the established practice of the Prophet ﷺ.

What If Women Are Praying Together Without Men?

If women are praying in congregation by themselves, they may form their own rows.

If there are several women, they stand together in a row rather than deliberately leaving one woman isolated in the middle.

There is also a recognised Sunnah concerning the position of a woman who leads other women in prayer: she stands among them in the middle of the row, rather than standing significantly ahead of them as a male imam normally does.

What If Men and Women Are Praying in the Same Congregation?

The basic arrangement is:

Imam → Men's rows → Women's rows

Thus, women should not be deliberately placed in the middle of the men's row when a normal congregational arrangement is possible.

An Important Distinction

The question of where men and women stand should be distinguished from the separate question of whether a prayer is valid if someone ends up standing in an unusual position because of necessity, lack of space, ignorance, or another circumstance.

The prescribed arrangement should be followed whenever possible, but the validity of a particular prayer can involve additional jurisprudential details.

Conclusion

When men and women are praying together in congregation, the Sunnah is for men to stand in the front and women behind them.

A woman praying behind a male imam should stand behind him, not alongside him. When women pray together without men, they may form their own rows, and the female imam stands among the women rather than ahead of them.

Therefore, placing women in the middle of men's rows is not the normal arrangement prescribed by the Sunnah when there is sufficient space to arrange the congregation properly.
