The Islamic Ruling on Blowing Kisses Over the Phone Before Marriage

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum, respected scholar. Is it permissible for a man to blow a kiss to his girlfriend over the phone, including making kissing sounds during a phone call?

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In Islam, it is important to distinguish between a person who is legally married and a couple who are merely dating, engaged, or have agreed to marry.

An engagement or an agreement to marry does not make a couple husband and wife. Until a valid Islamic marriage contract (nikah) has been concluded, they remain non-mahram to each other and must observe the relevant boundaries in their interactions.

1. Is Blowing a Kiss Over the Phone Permissible Before Marriage?

A kiss exchanged through a phone call is different from physical contact, since the two people are not physically touching. Nevertheless, the intention, content, and nature of the interaction matter.

If a person deliberately engages in intimate or sexually suggestive communication with someone they are not married to, particularly when it is intended to arouse desire or encourage prohibited intimacy, this raises legitimate Islamic concerns.

Allah, the Most High, says:

Arabic:

﴿وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَىٰ ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا﴾

Transliteration:

Wa lā taqrabū az-zinā innahu kāna fāḥishatan wa sāʾa sabīlā.

English translation:

“And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.”

Reference: Surah al-Isra', 17:32.

This verse instructs Muslims not only to avoid zina itself but also to avoid conduct that may lead towards it. However, not every affectionate word or sound is automatically equivalent to zina; the circumstances and nature of the interaction must be considered.

2. Does an Engagement Make Such Intimacy Permissible?

No. An engagement, a family agreement, or a public announcement that a couple intends to marry does not establish the rights of marriage.

Until the Islamic marriage contract has been concluded, the couple must continue to observe the boundaries applicable to non-mahram men and women.

Therefore, a couple who are engaged should avoid intimate communication that encourages sexual desire or crosses the boundaries of modest conduct.

3. What If the Couple Are Already Married?

The situation is different when a valid Islamic marriage contract has been concluded. Husband and wife may express affection for one another, including through telephone calls and messages, subject to general Islamic principles and any relevant concerns about privacy.

The essential distinction is whether the couple are legally married under Islamic law, not merely whether they intend to marry.

4. Advice for Young People Who Intend to Marry

Those who intend to marry should build their relationship on honesty, respect, good character, and a shared commitment to their faith.

They can discuss compatibility, family expectations, values, and practical matters relating to marriage while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

If both parties are serious about marriage, they should pursue the process in a lawful and responsible manner rather than treating engagement as though it were already marriage.

Modesty and self-restraint help protect personal dignity and support a healthy foundation for married life.

Conclusion

An engagement does not make intimate conduct permissible in the same way as marriage. Couples who have not concluded a valid Islamic marriage contract should avoid sexually suggestive communication and interactions that cross Islamic boundaries.

However, blowing a kiss over the phone is not physically identical to kissing someone in person, and it should not automatically be described as zina itself. Its ruling depends on the nature and purpose of the communication and the applicable Islamic principles.

May Allah guide us to what is right, protect us from wrongdoing, and grant those who seek marriage a lawful and blessed union.
