QUESTION ❓
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi
Wabarakatuh.
I know that when a person enters the
bathroom, there is a supplication to say upon entering and another upon
leaving.
My question is: does the same ruling apply when the bathroom is inside the bedroom or inside the house? Sometimes, when I use the bathroom in my room, I forget to say the supplication. Is there anything wrong with this?
ANSWER
❗️
Wa Alaikumussalam Warahmatullahi
Wabarakatuh.
Yes. If the room contains a
designated bathroom or toilet, the same Sunnah of saying the supplication when
entering applies. The location of the bathroom—whether it is outside the house,
inside the house, or attached to a bedroom—does not change the basic Sunnah.
What matters is that the person is
entering a place designated for relieving oneself.
The
Supplication When Entering the Bathroom
The Prophet ﷺ taught that a person should say:
بِسْمِ
اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
Transliteration:
Bismillāh, Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min al-khubuthi wal-khabā’ith.
Translation:
“In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female
devils.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 142; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
375.
The supplication is normally said before
entering the bathroom.
The
Supplication When Leaving
After leaving the bathroom, the
person should say:
غُفْرَانَكَ
Transliteration:
Ghufrānak.
Translation:
“I seek Your forgiveness.”
Sunan Abī Dāwūd 30; Jāmiʿ
al-Tirmidhī 7; Sunan Ibn Mājah 300.
What
If You Forget the Supplication?
If you occasionally forget to say
the entrance supplication, there is no need to become anxious or distressed.
Simply try to remember it in the future.
If you remember before entering,
say it before you enter.
If you have already entered and only
remember afterwards, there is no need to burden yourself with excessive worry.
The purpose of these supplications is to follow the Sunnah, and forgetting a
Sunnah unintentionally is not a reason for panic.
It is also better not to make a
habit of verbally reciting Allah's name while actually inside the toilet area,
particularly where one is relieving oneself. Therefore, make the entrance
supplication before entering.
Does
Having a Bathroom Inside the Bedroom Change the Ruling?
No.
Whether the bathroom is:
- outside the house,
- inside the house,
- attached to a bedroom, or
- part of an en-suite bathroom,
the person should observe the same
Sunnah when entering the designated toilet/bathroom.
Therefore, if you are accustomed to
saying the supplication when using an outside bathroom, try to develop the same
habit when entering the bathroom in your room.
Conclusion
The Sunnah of saying the
supplication upon entering and leaving the bathroom applies regardless of
whether the bathroom is inside or outside the house.
Before entering, say:
“Bismillāh, Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu
bika min al-khubuthi wal-khabā’ith.”
And after leaving, say:
“Ghufrānak.”
If you occasionally forget, there is
no need to worry excessively. Simply try to remember the Sunnah the next time.
May Allah help us to follow the
Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ and remember Him in
all circumstances.
