Must Spouses Clean Themselves Before Performing Ghusl After Intercourse?

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

After marital intercourse, is it necessary for spouses to wipe or clean their private areas with tissue, cloth, or something similar before performing ghusl? Or can they proceed directly to purification and perform ghusl?

ANSWER ❗️

Wa alaikumussalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

It is not obligatory to wipe the private areas with tissue or cloth before performing ghusl after marital intercourse.

A person may proceed directly to purification and perform ghusl from janābah, while washing the private area as part of the purification process.

What Is Required After Intercourse?

Intercourse makes ghusl obligatory, regardless of whether ejaculation occurs.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«إِذَا جَلَسَ بَيْنَ شُعَبِهَا الْأَرْبَعِ، ثُمَّ جَهَدَهَا، فَقَدْ وَجَبَ الْغُسْلُ»

Transliteration:
Idhā jalasa bayna shuʿabihā al-arbaʿi, thumma jahadahā, faqad wajaba al-ghusl.

Translation:
“When he has intercourse with her, ghusl becomes obligatory.”

Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 349.

Therefore, after intercourse, the essential matter is to perform the required ghusl before acts of worship that require ritual purity, such as prayer.

Is Wiping With Tissue or Cloth Necessary?

No. Using tissue, cloth, or another means to remove any remaining bodily fluid may be done if desired, but it is not a condition for the validity of ghusl.

A person may simply proceed to perform ghusl and wash the relevant areas properly.

The Sunnah also describes the Prophet ﷺ washing his private parts before completing his purification.

ʿĀ’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) described the Prophet's ﷺ ghusl from janābah and mentioned that he would wash his hands and his private area before completing the purification.

Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 248; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 316.

What If There Is Bodily Fluid on the Body?

If there is a substance that needs to be removed, it should be washed away. This can be done with water during the ghusl itself.

There is no requirement that it must first be removed using tissue or a cloth.

Conclusion

After marital intercourse:

  • Ghusl is required before prayer and other acts requiring major ritual purification.
  • Wiping with tissue or cloth before ghusl is not obligatory.
  • A person may proceed directly to ghusl and wash the private areas as part of the purification.
  • Using tissue or cloth beforehand is permissible if one wishes to do so.
  • The important requirement is that the ghusl is performed properly.
