I Dreamed That My Late Mother Died While in Sujood: What Does It Mean?

A Question from Someone Mourning His Mother

Question:
Assalamu alaikum. I hope you are all well. Please help me understand my dream.

My mother has passed away, and I frequently dream about her. In the dreams, she appears as though she is still alive, but towards the end of the dream I suddenly see that she has died. Last night, I dreamed that she was in sujood and then died at the end of the dream. Please, what could this dream mean?

Answer

Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

May Allah have mercy upon your mother, forgive her, grant her a spacious and illuminated grave, and admit her into Jannatul Firdaus.

First, try not to be frightened by this dream.

When a person loses someone they deeply love—particularly a mother—it is quite common to dream about that person. Grief can remain deeply rooted in the heart, and memories of the deceased may appear during sleep in different forms.

However, we should be careful about giving dreams interpretations that go beyond what Islam allows us to know.

Can We Say That the Dream Proves a Good Ending?

Seeing your deceased mother in sujood is certainly a beautiful and comforting image, especially because sujood is one of the greatest acts of worship.

But we cannot say with certainty:

“Because you saw her die in sujood in your dream, this proves that she had a good ending and is definitely in a particular state in the Hereafter.”

The condition of the deceased after death belongs to the unseen, and only Allah knows it with certainty.

A good dream may bring comfort, but it does not give us definitive knowledge about someone's final destination or their condition in the Hereafter.

Therefore, the safest response is to say: Allah knows best.

If the dream brings you comfort, you may take it as something pleasant without turning it into a definite religious conclusion.

Why Do You Keep Seeing Your Mother in Your Dreams?

There may be a very simple explanation: you miss her deeply.

The relationship between a child and his or her mother can be extraordinarily strong. After her death, memories, conversations, experiences and emotions connected with her may remain deeply present in the heart.

This can sometimes appear in dreams.

The fact that she appears alive in your dream and that you later discover that she has died may also reflect the painful reality of bereavement: part of your mind remembers her as the person you knew and loved, while another part knows that she is no longer physically present.

This does not necessarily mean that the dream carries a hidden prediction.

It may simply reflect love, memory and grief.

What Does Islam Teach About Dreams?

The Prophet ﷺ taught that dreams are not all the same.

He ﷺ said:

Arabic:
الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ

Transliteration:
Ar-ru'yā aṣ-ṣāliḥatu min Allāh, wal-ḥulmu min ash-shayṭān.

English translation:
“A good dream is from Allah, while a bad dream is from Satan.”

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim.

Therefore, if you see a dream that is pleasant and brings you peace, you may be grateful to Allah for it. If you see something frightening or disturbing, the Sunnah teaches you to seek refuge in Allah and not allow the dream to dominate your thoughts.

The Most Beneficial Thing You Can Do for Your Mother

Rather than spending too much time trying to decode every dream, direct your energy toward things that can genuinely benefit her.

1. Make Du'a for Her

This is one of the most important things a righteous child can do for a deceased parent.

Allah teaches us to pray:

Arabic:
رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Transliteration:
Rabbi irḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā.

English translation:
“My Lord! Be merciful to them, as they raised me when I was young.”

Qur'an 17:24

You can also sincerely ask Allah to forgive your mother, have mercy upon her, raise her rank and admit her into Paradise.

2. Give Charity on Her Behalf

The Prophet ﷺ was asked whether charity given on behalf of a deceased mother would benefit her.

He ﷺ answered in the affirmative.

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Therefore, if you are able, you may give charity on behalf of your mother. It could be food, water, financial assistance to someone in need, or another legitimate form of charity.

Do not feel that it must be something expensive. What matters is sincerity.

3. Maintain the Relationships She Left Behind

If your mother had relatives, friends or people she cared about, maintaining good relations with them can be a beautiful way of honouring her memory.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that among the ways of continuing kindness to one's parents is maintaining relationships connected to them.

Source: Sahih Muslim.

So visiting her relatives, treating them kindly and preserving family ties can be a meaningful form of birr toward your mother.

What About Reciting the Qur'an for Her?

Reciting the Qur'an is a great act of worship and can bring comfort and tranquillity to the living.

However, scholars have differed regarding whether the reward of Qur'an recitation can be gifted to the deceased. Because of this scholarly disagreement, it is better not to present it as an undisputed Sunnah specifically established for every deceased person.

There are, however, clear and undisputed acts that benefit the deceased, including du'a and charity, so these should receive particular attention.

Do Not Allow Grief to Turn Into Fear

It is natural to miss your mother.

It is natural to dream about her.

It is natural to wake up from such a dream with strong emotions.

But do not allow yourself to become frightened every time you see her in a dream.

Her death was already decreed by Allah, and no dream can change what Allah has decreed.

Allah says:

Arabic:
كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ

Transliteration:
Kullu nafsin dhā'iqatu al-mawt.

English translation:
“Every soul will taste death.”

Qur'an 3:185

Your responsibility now is not to discover the unseen through dreams. Your responsibility is to pray for your mother, honour her memory, maintain good deeds and ask Allah to unite you with her in Paradise.

Take Comfort From the Sujood

Although we cannot claim that the dream proves your mother's exact condition in the Hereafter, there is nothing wrong with feeling comforted by seeing her in sujood.

Sujood itself is a beautiful image of submission and worship.

You can simply say:

“Allah knows best. O Allah, if this dream is good, make it a source of comfort for me, and have mercy upon my mother.”

That is safer than claiming knowledge of something Allah has kept hidden from us.

A Final Message to the Bereaved Child

If you miss your mother, turn that love into du'a.

When you remember her, ask Allah to forgive her.

When you have the opportunity to give charity, give some on her behalf.

When you meet her relatives, treat them with kindness.

When you feel the pain of her absence, remember that this life is temporary and that the believer's hope is in Allah's mercy and the everlasting life of the Hereafter.

May Allah forgive your mother, shower her with His mercy, expand her grave, illuminate it for her, overlook her shortcomings, accept her good deeds, raise her among the righteous, and grant her Jannatul Firdaus.

May Allah also give you patience, strengthen your heart, ease the pain of your loss, and reunite you with your mother in Paradise.

Āmīn.
