QUESTION
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa
barakatuh.
I would like to ask about a dream I had. I dreamed that two of my grandfather's younger siblings had died. In the same dream, I was cutting my toenails, but I cut the nails on one foot and did not cut the other.
Please, I would like to know what
this dream means.
May Allah reward you and fulfil your
needs.
ANSWER
Wa alaikumus salam wa rahmatullahi
wa barakatuh.
May Allah grant you peace and
goodness.
Dreams can sometimes leave a person
deeply concerned, especially when they involve the death of relatives. However,
it is important to approach such dreams according to what is established in the
Qur'an and Sunnah rather than assuming that every detail has a definite hidden
meaning.
A
Dream of Someone's Death Does Not Mean They Will Die
Seeing a living person die in a
dream does not mean that the person will actually die.
Islam does not give us a general
rule that dreaming of someone's death predicts their real death, nor should
such a dream be used to determine how long that person will live.
The unseen belongs to Allah alone.
Allah says:
Qur'an
27:65
Arabic:
قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
Transliteration:
Qul lā yaʿlamu man fī as-samāwāti wal-arḍi al-ghayba illā Allāh.
English translation:
“Say, ‘None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”
Reference:
Qur'an 27:65.
Therefore, we should not tell
someone, “Your relative will die,” simply because they appeared dead in a
dream.
Likewise, it would be incorrect to
say with certainty that such a dream means the person will have a long life. Neither
conclusion is established by the dream itself.
What
Does Islam Teach About Dreams?
The Prophet ﷺ explained that dreams are not all of one kind.
He said:
Arabic:
الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ
الشَّيْطَانِ
Transliteration:
Ar-ru'yā aṣ-ṣāliḥatu min Allāh, wal-ḥulmu min ash-shayṭān.
English translation:
“A good dream is from Allah, while a bad dream is from Satan.”
Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari 6985; Sahih Muslim 2261.
Other authentic narrations indicate
that some dreams can also be related to what a person has been thinking about
while awake.
Consequently, a dream involving
relatives may simply arise from one's thoughts, memories, concerns or emotions.
It does not necessarily contain a specific prediction about those relatives.
What
About Cutting One Toenail and Leaving the Other?
The original interpretation
suggested that cutting the toenails represented purification, following the
Sunnah, removing problems, or an unfinished matter because only one foot was
completed.
These meanings should not be
presented as established Islamic interpretations.
There are authentic teachings
concerning trimming the nails as part of the fitrah, but that does not
mean that seeing oneself cutting one toenail in a dream necessarily symbolises
a particular event in one's life.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Transliteration:
Khamsun min al-fiṭrah: al-khitānu, wal-istihdādu, wa taqlīmu al-aẓfāri, wa
natfu al-ibṭi, wa qaṣṣu ash-shārib.
English translation:
“Five are from the natural disposition: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair,
trimming the nails, removing the armpit hair, and trimming the moustache.”
Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari 5889; Sahih Muslim 257.
This establishes the virtue of
keeping the nails trimmed in ordinary life. It does not, however,
establish a specific interpretation for dreaming about cutting one toenail and
leaving another.
Therefore, there is no need to
become anxious about this particular detail of the dream.
What
Should You Do If the Dream Frightened You?
If the dream was disturbing, the
Sunnah gives us clear instructions.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that when a person sees something he dislikes in a
dream, he should seek refuge in Allah from its evil and from Satan, spit
lightly to his left three times, and avoid telling people about the disturbing
dream. He should also turn over to the other side.
Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari 6985; Sahih Muslim 2261.
He also taught that a person who
dislikes what he sees should get up and pray.
Reference:
Sahih Muslim 2263.
These instructions are more firmly
established than attempting to identify a particular person or event
represented by every object in a dream.
Should
You Give Charity Because of the Dream?
Charity is an excellent act of
worship and Muslims are encouraged to give it regularly. However, we should not
claim that this particular dream requires charity to prevent a predicted
calamity.
There is no authentic evidence
that seeing relatives die in a dream means one must give charity to prevent
their death.
You may certainly give charity
seeking Allah's reward and asking Him to bless and protect your family, but do
not do so because you believe the dream has revealed a specific future event.
What
Can You Do for Your Relatives?
Rather than becoming frightened by
the dream, use it as an opportunity to strengthen your relationship with your
relatives.
You can:
- Make du'a for them.
- Maintain family ties.
- Check on relatives who may need your support.
- Encourage one another toward goodness.
- Remember that life and death are ultimately in Allah's
hands.
If any of the people in the dream
are actually deceased, you may make du'a for them and give charity on their
behalf where appropriate. But this should be based on the general teachings of
Islam, not because the dream proves that they are in a particular condition.
Final
Advice
There is no reliable basis for
concluding from this dream that the two relatives will die, that they will
necessarily live longer, or that the unfinished toenail represents a particular
unfinished matter in your life.
The safest Islamic approach is to avoid
certainty about matters of the unseen based on dreams.
If the dream was frightening, follow
the Sunnah for unpleasant dreams and place your trust in Allah. If it was
simply a strange dream that left you curious, you do not need to allow it to
control your thoughts or decisions.
Allah knows what we do not know, and
He alone knows the unseen.
Wallāhu aʿlam — And Allah knows
best.
