Dreaming Repeatedly of Your Former School: What Does It Mean in Islam?

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Please, I frequently dream that I am in my former school. I see many people and different things, and sometimes my former classmates from Junior Secondary School, Senior Secondary School and even university appear together in the same place.

Sometimes, I dream that I have gone somewhere and then miss a congregational prayer. I am unable to make it up before its time ends. This dream has occurred several times.

What could this repeated dream mean according to Islam?

ANSWER ❗️

Wa Alaikumussalam Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Dreams are part of human experience, but Islam does not teach us to assign a fixed meaning to every person, place or event seen in a dream. Therefore, seeing your former school, former classmates or missing a congregational prayer in a dream should not automatically be interpreted as a definite sign of a particular future event or hidden problem.

The Prophet ﷺ explained that dreams are of different types. Some are good dreams from Allah, some are disturbing dreams from Satan, and some arise from what a person has been thinking about while awake.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ»

Transliteration:
Ar-ru’yā aṣ-ṣāliḥatu min Allāh, wal-ḥulmu min ash-shayṭān.

Translation:
“A good dream is from Allah, while a bad dream is from Satan.”

Reference: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6984; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2261.

1. Why Might You Keep Seeing Your Former School?

It is possible that your former school appears repeatedly because it is connected with significant memories, experiences, relationships or stages of your life.

The fact that Junior Secondary School, Senior Secondary School and university experiences become mixed together in the same dream does not have a specific interpretation established in the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah.

Human beings can also dream about people, places and experiences that have remained in their memory. A person may therefore see an old school, former classmates or earlier stages of life without the dream carrying a special supernatural message.

It is therefore safer to say:

The dream may be connected to memories and thoughts from your past, but we cannot know its exact meaning with certainty.

2. What About Repeatedly Missing Congregational Prayer?

This part of the dream should also not be given a definite symbolic interpretation.

There is no authentic Qur’anic verse or hadith stating that dreaming of missing a congregational prayer necessarily means that a person is losing an opportunity in business, education, employment or another area of life.

However, because prayer is extremely important in Islam, such a dream can reasonably encourage a Muslim to examine his actual relationship with prayer while awake.

Allah says:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا

Transliteration:
Innaṣ-ṣalāta kānat ʿala al-mu’minīna kitāban mawqūtan.

Translation:
“Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times.”

Qur’an 4:103

Therefore, rather than concluding that the dream predicts a missed opportunity, the person should simply take it as an opportunity for self-reflection:

  • Am I maintaining my five daily prayers?
  • Do I try to perform them within their proper times?
  • Do I make sufficient effort to attend congregational prayer when it is required and reasonably possible?
  • Are worldly responsibilities sometimes distracting me from worship?

If everything is in order, there is no reason to become excessively worried because of the dream.

3. Does the Repetition Mean Something Certain?

Not necessarily.

A recurring dream does not automatically become a revelation or a definite message from Allah. Repetition can occur because of emotional concerns, memories, habits of thought, stress or other ordinary psychological factors.

Therefore, one should not conclude from the repetition that something bad is about to happen, that a particular opportunity has been lost, or that Allah is necessarily warning the person about a specific event.

The unseen belongs to Allah alone.

Allah says:

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Transliteration:
Qul lā yaʿlamu man fī as-samāwāti wal-arḍi al-ghayba illā Allāh.

Translation:
“Say, ‘None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”

Qur’an 27:65

4. What Should You Do?

If the dream is pleasant, thank Allah and hope for good, but do not build major decisions on it.

If the dream is disturbing, the Sunnah teaches a person to seek refuge in Allah from Satan, lightly spit or blow to the left three times, turn to the other side, and avoid telling people about the disturbing dream.

The Prophet ﷺ said that if a person sees something he dislikes in a dream, he should seek refuge in Allah from its evil and from Satan, spit lightly to his left three times, and not tell people about it. Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6984; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2261.

It is also beneficial to maintain the regular practices of remembrance before sleeping, including reciting Āyat al-Kursī and the last three chapters of the Qur’an. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq and al-Nās before sleeping. Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5017.

Conclusion

Dreaming repeatedly of your former school and former classmates does not have a fixed interpretation established by the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah. The mixture of different stages of education in the dream may simply reflect memories and thoughts from different periods of your life.

Likewise, dreaming that you missed congregational prayer does not prove that you have lost an opportunity in life or that a particular misfortune is approaching.

Nevertheless, because prayer is central to Islam, the dream can serve as a useful personal reminder to examine your actual prayer and worship while awake.

Do not become frightened or overly concerned about the dream. Maintain your prayers, remember Allah before sleeping, and leave the unseen to Allah.
