QUESTION ❓
Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa
barakatuh.
I dreamed that a white cat was standing in front of me while I was lying down. I tried very hard to get up and drive it away, but I could not.
Please, Sheikh, what does this dream
mean?
ANSWER
❗️
Wa ‘alaikumus-salam wa rahmatullahi
wa barakatuh.
There is no authentic Qur’anic
verse or hadith establishing that a white cat in a dream has a particular fixed
meaning, such as representing a jinn, an enemy, deception, or a specific
person.
Therefore, we should not tell the
person who experienced this dream that it definitely means that a jinn is
troubling her or that someone close to her is secretly deceiving her. Such
claims require evidence, and dreams cannot be used to establish matters of the
unseen.
What
Does Islam Teach About Dreams?
The Prophet ﷺ explained that dreams are of different kinds.
He said:
«الرُّؤْيَا
الصَّالِحَةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ»
“A good dream is from Allah, while a
bad dream is from Satan.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, 6984; Sahih
Muslim, 2261.
Some dreams may therefore be
comforting or encouraging, while others may be frightening. Some may also arise
from a person's thoughts, experiences, fears, or concerns while awake.
Consequently, seeing a particular
animal in a dream does not automatically give that animal a fixed religious
meaning.
What
About Being Unable to Move or Wake Up?
The experience described—being aware
of one's surroundings or wanting to get up but being unable to move—can
sometimes occur as sleep paralysis, a recognised sleep phenomenon.
It does not, by itself, prove that a
person has been affected by jinn or another supernatural force.
If such experiences occur
repeatedly, particularly if they interfere with sleep or cause significant
distress, it is reasonable to discuss them with a qualified healthcare
professional.
At the same time, a Muslim may
continue to observe the established Sunnah practices of protection before
sleeping.
What
Should a Person Do After a Frightening Dream?
The Prophet ﷺ taught that when a person sees something unpleasant in a dream,
he should:
- Seek refuge in Allah from Satan
by saying:
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
A‘ūdhu
billāhi min ash-shayṭānir-rajīm.
- Spit lightly/dryly to his left three times.
- Turn over to the other side.
- Avoid telling people about the disturbing dream.
These instructions are established
in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
Protection
Before Sleeping
A person can also observe the
established Sunnah practices before sleeping, including reciting:
- Ayat al-Kursi (Qur’an 2:255)
- Surat al-Ikhlas
- Surat al-Falaq
- Surat al-Nas
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite the last three surahs, blow into his hands, and
wipe them over his body before sleeping. This is authentically reported in Sahih
al-Bukhari, 5017.
Should
She Be Afraid Because of the White Cat?
No.
She should not conclude from this
dream that she has a jinn problem, that someone is secretly plotting against
her, or that a particular misfortune will occur.
If the dream frightened her, she
should follow the Sunnah response to disturbing dreams, seek refuge in Allah,
maintain her regular prayers and supplications, and avoid becoming preoccupied
with trying to discover a hidden meaning that has no reliable Islamic basis.
Dream interpretation is not a field
in which every symbol has a universally fixed meaning.
Conclusion
The appearance of a white cat
in this dream has no established, specific interpretation in the Qur’an and
authentic Sunnah.
Likewise, the inability to get up
does not prove that the dream was caused by jinn. It may occur in connection
with ordinary sleep phenomena such as sleep paralysis.
Therefore, the safest Islamic
approach is not to assign a definite meaning to the dream, but to follow
the Sunnah if the dream was frightening and place one's trust in Allah.
