Dreaming of a Co-Wife Giving Birth to Quintuplets and Seeing Yourself Pregnant: An Islamic Perspective

The Question

Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh.

I hope you are in good health.

I would like to ask about some dreams I have had recently. I have been married for thirteen years, but I have never given birth. I have a co-wife who is currently pregnant.

In my first dream, I saw my co-wife giving birth to five babies. We were bathing the babies together, and during that same dream, I saw myself pregnant.

On another occasion, I dreamt that I took a pregnancy test, which showed that I was four months pregnant. My husband's young daughter was beside me and confirmed that I was indeed pregnant and that the test showed four months.

I later had another similar dream in which I was pregnant and took a test that confirmed it. An unfamiliar woman was beside me, telling me that I was pregnant and that my pregnancy was even further advanced than my co-wife's.

I suspect that my strong desire to have a child may be responsible for these recurring dreams. Is there any Islamic guidance concerning their meaning? I would appreciate your advice.

May Allah increase you in good health. Thank you.

The Answer

Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

May Allah grant you peace of mind, strengthen your faith, and bless you with what is best for you in this life and the Hereafter.

Dear sister, I understand that waiting for a child for many years can be emotionally challenging, especially when your co-wife is pregnant. Your dreams are understandable in this context, and it is important to approach them with compassion and sound Islamic guidance.

The first thing to understand is that a dream about pregnancy does not establish that you are pregnant or guarantee that you will conceive in the future. Although a good dream may bring comfort, we must be careful not to claim knowledge of the unseen without reliable evidence.

1. Dreaming of Your Co-Wife Giving Birth to Five Babies

In your dream, your co-wife gave birth to five babies, and you helped bathe them.

Because your co-wife is pregnant in real life, it is possible that your awareness of her pregnancy has influenced your dreams. Your thoughts about childbirth, babies, and family life may be reflected in the images you experience while sleeping.

However, there is no established evidence in the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah that dreaming of someone giving birth to five babies necessarily signifies increased wealth, the resolution of family problems, or the arrival of blessings for everyone in the household.

We should therefore avoid assigning a definite meaning to the number of babies or to the act of bathing them.

You can, of course, pray that Allah grants your co-wife a safe delivery and blesses the children with good health.

2. Dreaming That You Are Pregnant

You mentioned that you repeatedly saw yourself pregnant, despite never having given birth.

A strong desire to become a mother may influence the content of dreams. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that dreams can arise from different sources, including a person's own thoughts and concerns.

This teaching is reported in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2263, although numbering may vary by edition.

Consequently, your dreams may reflect your longing for a child and the attention you naturally give to pregnancy and childbirth.

Nevertheless, we cannot determine with certainty that this is the explanation for every dream you have had. Nor can we conclude that the dreams are a divine promise that you will conceive soon.

3. What Does Seeing Four Months of Pregnancy Mean?

In one dream, your pregnancy test indicated that you were four months pregnant. In another, an unfamiliar woman told you that your pregnancy was further advanced than your co-wife's.

These details may feel significant because they appeared repeatedly. However, there is no reliable Islamic evidence establishing that seeing four months of pregnancy in a dream means that a wish has become certain, that a blessing is approaching, or that conception will occur within a particular period.

Likewise, the unfamiliar woman in your dream cannot be identified as an angel or assumed to be delivering a message from Allah. Such claims would go beyond what we can establish from the dream.

The safest approach is to acknowledge that the dream affected you emotionally without treating its details as predictions.

4. Does the Dream Mean That You Will Have a Child?

We cannot say that it does.

Islam encourages Muslims to maintain hope in Allah's mercy and power, but hope should not be confused with certainty about what a dream means.

Allah tells us about the supplication of Prophet Zakariyya (peace be upon him), who asked Him for offspring:

Arabic:

رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ

Transliteration:

Rabbi lā tadharnī fardan wa-anta khayru al-wārithīn.

English translation:

“My Lord, do not leave me childless, though You are the best of inheritors.”

Reference: Qur'an 21:89.

This is a beautiful supplication for someone who desires children. You may recite it while asking Allah sincerely to grant you righteous offspring.

The verse teaches us to turn to Allah in supplication. It does not mean that everyone who recites it, or dreams about pregnancy, will necessarily conceive in a particular way or at a particular time.

5. What Should You Do After These Dreams?

There are several beneficial steps you can take.

First, continue making supplications. Ask Allah for righteous offspring, peace of mind, and whatever is best for your circumstances.

Second, do not compare your journey with your co-wife's. Her pregnancy does not mean that Allah has forgotten you or that your life is less valuable. Each person's circumstances are different.

Third, seek appropriate medical advice if you have concerns about fertility. Since you have been married for thirteen years without giving birth, if you have not already done so, you and your husband may benefit from consulting a qualified fertility specialist. Fertility difficulties can have different causes, and a medical assessment may help identify whether treatment or other support could be useful. Seeking medical care does not contradict trust in Allah.

Fourth, do not let the dreams become a source of distress. You may appreciate any comfort they bring, but avoid making important decisions or developing definite expectations about pregnancy solely because of them.

Conclusion

Dear sister, your repeated dreams of pregnancy may be connected to your deep desire to become a mother and your awareness of your co-wife's pregnancy. However, their precise meaning cannot be established with certainty, and they should not be treated as a guarantee of future childbirth.

Continue praying to Allah, maintain hope in His mercy, and consider appropriate medical guidance if you have concerns about fertility. Whatever your circumstances, your worth and dignity are not determined by whether you have children.

May Allah grant you tranquillity, reward you for your patience, and bless you with what is best for you. May He grant you righteous offspring if that is good for you, and make your heart content with His decree.
