Is It Haram to Sleep Naked with Your Spouse?

Assalamu alaikum Malam Khamis. I have a question. Do you answer questions in English? I don't read Hausa. Here is my question: In Islam, is it haram to sleep naked with your spouse? Or should there always be some covering between husband and wife?

Wa alaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In Islam, intimacy and comfort between husband and wife are halal and are part of the mercy and love Allah placed within marriage. There is nothing sinful in spouses sleeping together without clothes in private if both are comfortable and it remains within the boundaries of modesty and respect. Allah says regarding spouses:

 ... ۚ هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّ ۗ ...

“They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:187).

Showing the closeness, comfort, and intimacy allowed between husband and wife. Islam does not place unnecessary hardship or strictness between married couples regarding lawful intimacy in privacy.

However, scholars mention that maintaining some modesty and covering at times is from HAYA (modesty), which is beloved in Islam, especially when not engaged in intimacy. There is a narration that the Prophet ﷺ encouraged modesty even in private settings, though husband and wife are fully lawful for one another. So sleeping naked with one’s spouse is not haram, but couples should maintain respect, cleanliness, good manners, and avoid imitating shameless behavior. Marriage in Islam is built upon love, mercy, comfort, and emotional closeness — not shame regarding halal affection between spouses.

May Allah place love, mercy, modesty, and barakah between spouses, protect marriages from harm, and bless homes with peace, affection, and closeness to Him. Ameen 🤲
