Preamble
Today, Hausa people across
Nigeria and around the globe come together to celebrate World Hausa Day (Ranar
Hausa Ta Duniya) 2026 – a day dedicated to honoring the Hausa language,
culture, history, and enduring legacy.
From the historic Daura Palace in
Katsina State to diaspora communities in London, New York, and Dubai, the
celebration continues to grow as a powerful expression of Hausa identity and
pride.
What Is World Hausa Day?
World Hausa Day is observed
annually on August 26. It was introduced in 2015 by Nigerian journalist
Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari as a social media initiative to promote the use of the
Hausa language online and raise awareness of its cultural significance.
Jari's original vision was simple
yet impactful: encourage Hausa speakers to use the language on social media,
share proverbs, create new Hausa words for modern concepts, and post photos of
Hausa traditions and culture. What began as a grassroots digital campaign has
since transformed into an international cultural movement celebrated across
Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.
A Growing Global Celebration
Though World Hausa Day has yet to
receive formal recognition from the United Nations, it has grown significantly
in popularity and reach. Events now include:
