These devices have become popular in recent times as they provide an efficient and effective way to read and understand the Qur’an and its related sciences. Also this article harps on the use of online applications and software that provide users with the tools to memorise and repeat the verses of the Qur’an easily, as well as providing guidance on the correct pronunciation and recitation of the text. Looking at the nature of the research the analytical method is used when conducting the research. The article will conduct findings and recommendations at the end of article. In conclusion, it has been observed that modern technology can be a great asset in the study and memorisation of the Glorious Qur'an.

Introduction

Muslims have been using the Internet for online education, Qur’an memorisation/learning, Qur’an teaching, as well as online businesses, banking, socializing, politics and communication. Bundles of excellent Islamic websites have appeared over the Internet and so did many websites spreading false Islamic information about the Qur’an and Islam. Therefore, the lack of a controlling authority to provide standards and guidelines for Muslims using the Internet lead to many problems and so is the issue with the Qur’an and attempts to create unauthentic and fake copies, such as the True Furqan. The use of ICT combined with software applications for propagating and teaching the Qur’an, in addition it evaluated the effectiveness of digital technologies for serving the Glorious Qur’an.

By its very nature, Islam welcomes every new Lawful invention based on the exploration of the forces of nature. Never can it disallow the use of newer inventions without genuine reasons. The Qur’an and Sunnah are the powerful microscope used in determining the lawfulness or otherwise of a thing. It declares that all things are the creation of Allah, who has created them for the benefit of human beings.

Concept of Computers in the Qur’an

Computers are the pivot for Information and communication technologies and the key player in today’s globally interconnected human society. It is considered a tool for writing, storing, disseminating and sharing knowledge much similar to the concept of Al-Qur’an in the Qur’an as Allah (SWT) mentioned:

Proclaim (or read) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, who created, created man out of mere clot of congealed blood. Proclaim! And thy lord is most bountiful-He who taught (the use of) the pen. Taught man that which he knew not.[1]

The first verse revealed to our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) asks him to read. It puts the focus on the importance of reading or acquiring knowledge in Islam. The phrase ‘the pen’ is not restricted to its literal meaning but entails a wide scope. For instance ‘the pen’ is a means to write, store, distribute, and share knowledge or even mere passing of information. Consequently, the computer could be regarded as a device with many similarities to the notion of ‘the pen’ as stated by Allah (the Exalted) in the first revealed chapter. Another important point that should be stated is the significance of knowledge (an important aspect in the journey of human beings).

Allah will exalt those of you who believe, and those who are given knowledge, in high degrees; and Allah is Aware of what you do[2].

In the Qur’an, Allah (the Exalted) acquaints man with the concept of “information”. The Almighty says: And He taught Adam the names of all things; and placed them before the angels, and said:

"Tell me the names of these if you are right”."[3]

The above verse of the Qur’an shows that the concept of information system has been demonstrated since the creation of man. Allah renders the quest for information as part of human nature which distinguished man from the angel. Therefore, man is able to love and understand love, and thus plan and initiate, as he occupies the office of vicegerent. No wonder today it is the computer and its related technologies that have become an important and a popular means for sharing information and knowledge especially in an environment where users have access to thousands and thousands of gigabytes of databases.

Using ICT to enhance teaching and spreading knowledge of the Glorious Qur’an

According to Sun Microsystems, There are now 2.7 billion mobile phones in use. Between January 2001 and December 2010, our global society will have transformed from one where 13% carried a mobile phone, to one where 70% carry one. .., thirty countries had already exceeded 100% per capita cell phone usage.[4] This increase in portable mobile device use presents yet another mechanism for the teaching and spreading of the Glorious Qur’an.

In short, the information-age has witnessed the Glorious Qur’an in its various forms (e.g. textual, audio or translation) exploring new mechanisms to reach its users, as a consequence of adopting the new ICT technologies. An alternative mechanism for digital Qur’an distribution has become evident with the use of portable digital devices. Portable digital devices that enable the spreading and teaching of the Glorious Qur’an include: laptop computers, handheld digital-Qur’an, portable digital assistants (PDAs), mobiles, handheld iPods, MP3/4/5 players. The handheld digital-Qur’an is dedicated for teaching Qur’an through multimedia recitation, visual text, displays and translation, whilst the remaining technologies facilitate the teaching of the Glorious Qur’an following software installation. Advantageously, portable digital devices allow users to read/listen to the Qur’an while on the move thereby removing the restriction of a single static environment[5].

Role of modern technology in teaching and memorisation of the Qur’an

The Qur’an is the sacred, most authentic, and unchanged book of Allah since its revelation over 14 centuries. People usually read Qur’an using the traditional printed version on paperback format called Mushaf. The recent advent of smart technologies like smart phones, digital devices and tablets has collected the daily life routines under a single touch and Muslims are adopting these new tools with an exponential growth. Muslims have been using the Internet for online education, Qur’an memorisation/learning, Qur’an teaching, online businesses, banking, socializing, politics and communication[6].

According to a survey conducted by the International Telecommunication Union, the number of mobile phones to 100 people seems to increase rapidly as it is noticed that in some countries the number of mobiles per population of 100 exceeds 100[7]. According to BBC Measuring the Information Society 2010, the number of mobile phones in 2010 exceeds the 5- billion figure where the population for the world has reached more than 7 billion in November 2011, which means that over 70% of the population on this earth are using mobile technology[8]. This shows how much we are relying on technology in our daily lives.

Application of Modern technology in teaching and memorisation of the Qur’an such as:

(i)Smart Phones intro Devices (ii) Botim (iii) Talkray (iv) Webesmeet (v) Teams (vi) Zello (vii) Google meet (viii) Mixlr(ix) Viva Video (x) Kinematics (xi) Power director (xii) Skype (xiii) Qur’an Auto Reciter (QAR) (xiv) Mobile Qur’anic Memorisation System Using RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology (xv) Digital Qur’an Pen Reader (xvi) Whatsapp (xvii) Facebook (xviii) Youtube (xix) Imo (xx) Zoom (xxi) Telegram among others.

The applications are numerous as one can see in the above explanation, but the researchers decided to choose only five and give in-depth elucidations on them and examples.

Zello

Zello is a push-to-talk communication application that allows users to have real-time conversations over the internet. While it can be used for various purposes, including teaching and memorising of the Glorious Qur'an, it's important to note that Zello is primarily designed for voice communication and not specifically tailored for educational purposes. However, you can still utilize its features creatively to enhance your teaching and memorisation efforts[9].

How you can use Zello in teaching and memorising the Glorious Qur'an

Students can ask questions, seek explanations, and engage in discussions to deepen their understanding[13].

Pronunciation practice: Zello can also be used for pronunciation practice. Students can use the voice communication feature to listen to their peers or instructors recite specific verses, helping them improve their pronunciation and Tajweed (rules of Qur'anic recitation)[14].

Viva Video

Viva Video is a popular video editing application that allows users to create and edit videos using various features and tools. While it is primarily used for general video editing purposes, it can be utilised in creative ways for teaching and memorisation of the Glorious Qur'an.[15]

How you can use Viva Video in teaching and memorisation of the Glorious Qur’an:

Recitation Practice: Use Viva Video to record yourself reciting verses or chapters from the Qur'an. You can then play back the recordings to assess your pronunciation, intonation, and memorisation accuracy. This can be a helpful tool for self-improvement and self-evaluation.

Memorisation Aid: Break down longer verses or chapters into smaller segments and record them individually using Viva Video. You can add text overlays or subtitles to display the Arabic text along with the audio recitation. This way, you can create a series of video clips that aid in the memorisation process, allowing you to focus on specific sections at a time[16].

Memorisation Aid: Break down longer Qur'anic passages into smaller sections and create short videos for each section using Viva Video. You can add background music or audio recitation to provide a melodic and engaging experience, making it easier for students to memorise the verses. Also, the Viva Video allows you to create video compilations or montages. You can record yourself reciting a particular Surah or section of the Qur'an, and then use the application to merge these clips together. This can serve as a helpful tool for individuals who are memorising the Qur'an, as they can play back the video repeatedly to review and reinforce their memorisation[17].

Visual Presentations: Viva Video offers various effects, filters, and transitions that can enhance the visual appeal of your videos. You can utilize these features to create engaging presentations related to Qur'anic studies. For example, you can incorporate verses, translations, commentary, or images alongside your spoken explanations to provide a comprehensive learning experience.[18]

Verse Memorisation: Create Verse Memorisation Videos - Break down verses or chapters of the Qur'an into smaller sections. Record yourself reciting each section separately and then compile them using Viva Video to create a comprehensive memorisation video. You can add text overlays with the Arabic text and translations to aid in understanding and memorisation[19].

Overall, Viva Video can be a useful tool to enhance your teaching and memorisation practices by incorporating multimedia elements and creating visually engaging videos that aid in understanding and retaining Qur'anic knowledge.

Kinematics

Kinematics is a branch of physics that deals with the motion of objects without considering the forces causing the motion. It involves the study of concepts such as displacement, velocity, and acceleration. While kinematics is primarily applied in the field of physics, it can also be used as a teaching tool to aid in the teaching and memorisation of the Qur'an[20].

When it comes to teaching and memorising the Qur'an, kinematics can be applied metaphorically to enhance the learning process.

How you could Incorporate Kinematics into Teaching and Memorisation Techniques for the Qur'an

Analysing Recitation Speed: Kinematics can help in understanding the pace and rhythm of recitation. By measuring the time taken to recite each verse or specific passages, students can identify patterns and variations in speed. This can be useful for appreciating the melodic flow and structure of the Qur'an, aiding in memorisation.[21]

Examining Articulation: Kinematics can assist in analysing the articulation of sounds and pronunciation during Qur'an recitation. By observing the movement of the mouth, tongue, and vocal cords, students can develop a better understanding of how specific sounds are produced. This knowledge can enhance their recitation skills and help in preserving the correct pronunciation of the verses.[22]

Understanding Intonation and Stress: Kinematics can aid in comprehending the rise and fall of pitch, as well as the emphasis placed on certain words or syllables during recitation. By visualizing the variations in vocal frequency or amplitude, students can identify the intonation and stress patterns used by experienced reciters. This can contribute to a more meaningful and accurate recitation of the Qur'an.[23]

Memorisation Techniques: Kinematics can be employed as a mnemonic tool to facilitate the memorisation of Qur'anic verses. By associating specific verses with physical movements or gestures, students can create kinematics connections that aid in recall. For example, they can assign particular arm movements to specific sections of a verse or perform gestures that represent the meaning of the verse.[24] These physical actions can enhance memory retention and retrieval.
In the context of teaching and memorising the Qur'an, footnotes can be utilised to provide further insights, explanations, or references related to the kinematic aspects discussed. They can include references to scholarly works, recitation resources,[25] or additional information on specific recitation techniques or memorisation strategies. Footnotes serve as a valuable tool for expanding on the subject matter and offering students a deeper understanding of the kinematic principles applied to the Qur'an.[26]

Displacement: In kinematics, displacement refers to the change in position of an object. Similarly, in the context of memorising the Qur'an, displacement can be used to represent progress. Students can measure their progress by tracking the number of verses or chapters they have memorised and their location in the overall text.[27]

Botim

Botim is a communication application that offers voice and video calling services. While it can be used for various purposes, including personal and business communication, it can also be utilised as a tool for teaching and memorisation of the Qur'an, or it can be utilised as a tool to facilitate remote learning and practice sessions for students who are studying or memorising the Qur'an[28].

How Botim can be applied in teaching and memorisation of the Qur'an

Memorisation Practice: Memorising the Qur'an requires consistent practice and revision. With Botim, teachers can schedule regular practice sessions with their students. They can listen to students recite verses, offer corrections, and assess progress. Teachers can also record their recitations and share them with students, allowing them to listen repeatedly for better memorisation[29].

Remote Tutoring: Botim can be used to connect students with Qur'an tutors or teachers who are located in different regions or countries. Through voice or video calls, students can receive personalized lessons, guidance, and corrections from their tutors, enhancing their learning experience. In further explanation remote Qur'an Learning: Botim enables students and teachers to have real-time voice or video calls, which can be used to conduct remote Qur'an learning sessions. Students can recite verses to their teachers, and teachers can provide guidance, corrections, and feedback[30].

Group Recitation and Memorisation: Botim can be used to create group study sessions where multiple students can join a voice or video call. This enables students to recite and memorise together, simulating a classroom-like environment. Group recitation helps students gain confidence, improve pronunciation, and receive support from their peers[31].

One-on-One Tutoring: Botim provides a platform for individualized instruction and personalized attention. Students can have direct access to qualified teachers who can guide them through the memorisation process, answer their questions, and address their specific needs[32].

Group Discussions: Botim can facilitate group discussions among students who are studying the same portion of the Qur'an. They can form study circles or virtual study groups to discuss various aspects of the Qur'an, exchange knowledge, and support each other's learning journey[33].

Memorisation Support: Students who are memorising the Qur'an can use Botim to connect with memorisation buddies or partners. They can recite and revise portions of the Qur'an to each other, helping in the memorisation process. Regular communication and accountability can significantly aid in maintaining motivation and consistency in memorisation efforts[34].

Question and Answer Sessions: Teachers can conduct question and answer sessions using Botim to assess students' understanding of Qur'anic concepts, themes, or specific verses. Students can also ask their teachers for clarifications or explanations, promoting a deeper understanding of the Qur'an[35].

It's important to note that while Botim can facilitate remote learning and practice, it should not be considered a substitute for traditional methods of Qur'an memorisation, such as studying with a qualified teacher in person. However, it can be a useful supplementary tool to enhance the learning experience and provide additional support. Also, it is significant to note that while Botim can serve as a useful communication tool, the teaching and guidance of the Qur'an often require qualified scholars, teachers, or tutors with expertise in Islamic studies. The app can supplement traditional learning methods, but it should not replace the guidance of knowledgeable individuals who can provide comprehensive instruction and support.

v. Skype

Skype is a proprietary telecommunications application operated by Skype Technologies, a division of Microsoft, best known for video telephony, video conferencing and voice calls. It also has instant messaging and file transfer. When using Skype for teaching and memorisation of the Qur'an, it is essential to have a stable internet connection, clear audio/video setup, and a quiet environment conducive to learning. Additionally, both students and teachers should have the necessary materials, such as a physical copy or a digital version of the Qur'an, to follow along during the sessions.[36]

Skype can be a useful tool for teaching and memorising the Qur'an, offering several benefits to both teachers and students. Skype can be a useful tool in teaching and memorisation of the Qur'an, offering various benefits for students and teachers. Here are some ways Skype can be applied and how it works in the context of teaching and memorising the Glorious Qur'an:

Remote Tutoring: Skype allows students and teachers to connect remotely, regardless of their geographical location. This is particularly useful for students who may not have access to qualified Qur'an teachers in their local area. Through Skype, students can receive personalized guidance and lessons from experienced teachers, enabling them to learn and memorise the Qur'an effectively.[37]

One-on-One Lessons: Skype provides an ideal platform for one-on-one lessons, allowing for focused attention and individualized instruction. Teachers can assess each student's progress, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and tailor the lessons accordingly. This personalized approach enhances the learning experience and helps students memorise the Qur'an more efficiently[38].

Recitation Practice: Skype enables students to recite verses or passages of the Qur'an to their teachers in real-time. Teachers can provide immediate feedback on pronunciation, Tajweed (rules of Qur'anic recitation), and recitation fluency. The visual and audio capabilities of Skype ensure that students receive accurate guidance and corrections, enhancing their recitation skills[39].

Audio and Video Recordings: With Skype, lessons and recitations can be recorded for later review. This feature allows students to revisit their lessons, listen to their recitations, and self-evaluate their progress. Additionally, teachers can provide feedback on recorded recitations, offering detailed guidance for improvement.[40]

Interactive Learning: Skype offers interactive tools such as screen sharing, file sharing, and virtual whiteboards. These features enable teachers to share relevant materials, such as Qur'anic texts, audio recordings, and supplementary resources. Students can also interact with the materials, ask questions, and engage in discussions with their teachers, enhancing their understanding of the Qur'an[41].

Memorisation Support: Skype provides an avenue for teachers to support students in memorising the Qur'an, known as "hifz." Teachers can assist students in memorising specific portions or entire chapters (Surahs) of the Qur'an by listening to their recitation, correcting mistakes, and providing guidance on effective memorisation techniques[42].

Furthermore, in another explanation memorisation Support: Skype can be an effective tool for memorising the Qur'an. Teachers can employ techniques such as recitation, repetition, and revision sessions through Skype. They can listen to the student's recitation, evaluate the accuracy of memorisation, and provide guidance on proper memorisation techniques. Regular check-ins through Skype sessions help track the progress of the memorisation process.[43]

It's important to note that while Skype provides a platform for remote learning and interaction, the effectiveness of teaching and memorising the Qur'an ultimately relies on the expertise and dedication of the teacher, the commitment of the student, and the availability of suitable learning resources. Skype serves as a facilitator, bridging the gap between students and teachers, and enhancing the overall learning experience.
