Traditional dramatic performances have long been an integral part of human life. This is not limited to the Hausa alone but extends to all communities across different countries, though styles and forms vary according to culture and environment.
Traditional Hausa dramatic performances, like many other Hausa
customs, are facing gradual extinction due to the influence of modernity.
Recognizing this decline, the authors have found it necessary to preserve these
dramatic performances in a single volume that will serve as a lasting
reference. Even if these performances disappear from practice, they will remain
documented in writing until Judgment Day.
The authors of this book previously collected 214 traditional
Hausa games in 2021 and published them in a book titled Wasanni
a Ƙasar Hausa (Games in Hausa Land). That book contained all types of
games—both dramatic and non-dramatic. Later, they decided to extract the
dramatic performances from the collection, successfully isolating 50 dramatic
performances.
This book is divided into six chapters:
Chapter One serves
as an introduction, providing the meaning of dramatic performance, its
benefits, and its classifications.
Chapters Two through Five contain information on various traditional dramatic
performances, including those for boys, girls, mixed-gender groups, as well as
adult men and adult women.
Chapter Six is
the final chapter and discusses the impact of modernity on traditional Hausa
dramatic performances.
After the list of references, the book presents an appendix
containing a structured table of these 50 traditional dramatic performances.
This table is designed to provide readers and researchers with essential
information about each performance at a glance. For each dramatic performance,
the following details are provided:
i. Name of the performance
ii. Participants
iii. Category/classification
iv. Equipment/props used
v. Benefits/purposes of the performance
