The Ruling on a Woman’s Voice and Singing in Islam

QUESTION ❓

What is the Islamic ruling on a woman's voice? Some people say that a woman's voice is part of her ʿawrah, while others say it is not. Which view is correct? I would like to start singing, so I want to understand the Islamic ruling on this matter.

ANSWER ❗️

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm.

A woman's voice is not considered ʿawrah in itself according to many scholars. This is supported by the fact that women spoke to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), asked him questions, sought knowledge, and communicated with the Companions without being prohibited from speaking.

However, Islam provides guidance on how speech should be delivered and how both men and women should conduct themselves.

1. What Does the Qur'an Say About a Woman's Voice?

Allah, the Most High, says:

Arabic:

﴿فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِالْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ الَّذِي فِي قَلْبِهِ مَرَضٌ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفًا﴾

Transliteration:

Fa-lā takhḍaʿna bil-qawli fa-yaṭmaʿa alladhī fī qalbihi maraḍun wa qulna qawlan maʿrūfā.

English translation:

“So do not be soft in speech [to men] lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.”

Reference: Surah al-Ahzab, 33:32.

This verse addresses the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and instructs them to avoid a manner of speaking that could invite inappropriate attention. Scholars also discuss its broader lessons concerning modesty and interactions between men and women.

The verse does not prohibit women from speaking altogether. Women may ask questions, teach, learn, give advice, recite the Qur'an, and communicate when observing the relevant Islamic guidelines.

2. What Is the Ruling on Singing?

The ruling on singing requires further consideration because it depends on several factors.

The lyrics: Songs containing obscene language, encouragement of sinful behaviour, or messages that promote wrongdoing are not permissible on account of their content.

The manner of singing: A performance deliberately designed to provoke inappropriate sexual desire or encourage prohibited conduct raises separate concerns.

Musical instruments: Scholars have differed over the permissibility of various musical instruments. The ruling may therefore depend on the instruments used and the scholarly position being followed.

The setting and audience: Singing among women, singing at a wedding or Eid celebration, and publishing performances for a broad audience may involve different circumstances that require consideration.

Consequently, it is inaccurate to declare every song sung by a woman forbidden merely because the singer is female. Equally, the fact that a woman's voice is not inherently ʿawrah does not mean that every form of singing is permissible.

3. Is Singing Permissible at Celebrations?

Authentic hadiths establish that certain forms of singing and singing with a duff were permitted on particular occasions, including Eid and weddings, subject to the relevant conditions.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that two young girls were singing in her presence on the day of Eid. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) objected, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed them to continue.

References: Sahih al-Bukhari, 952; Sahih Muslim, 892.

These narrations demonstrate that some forms of singing were permitted in specific celebratory circumstances. However, they do not establish that every type of song, every lyric, or every musical instrument is permissible.

The setting, content, manner of performance, and applicable scholarly rulings must still be considered.

4. Advice for a Woman Who Wants to Start Singing

If you wish to pursue singing, consider choosing songs that communicate beneficial messages, promote good character, encourage learning, offer sincere advice, or inspire people towards positive actions.

Avoid lyrics that promote obscenity, wrongdoing, or harmful behaviour. Also consider the manner in which the songs are performed, the instruments used, and the audience to whom they are presented.

If you intend to use musical instruments or publish songs on social media, consult a knowledgeable scholar who can assess the particular type of music and performance you have in mind.

It is better to seek a ruling on the actual content and method of performance than to assume that every form of singing has the same Islamic ruling.

Conclusion

A woman's voice is not inherently ʿawrah according to many scholars. Nevertheless, Islamic teachings require modesty and appropriate conduct in speech and public interaction.

The ruling on singing depends on factors such as the lyrics, manner of performance, musical instruments, setting, and audience. Authentic hadiths establish that certain forms of singing were permitted on particular occasions, but they should not be taken as blanket approval of every type of music.

May Allah guide us to what is correct, help us use our voices in beneficial ways, and make our words and actions a means of goodness.
