Question
Assalamu Alaikum, Sheikh Khamis.
What is the Islamic ruling on praying behind an imam who makes mistakes while reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, particularly a mistake that changes the meaning of a verse? For example, when he says “Ahdina” instead of “Ihdina” in the phrase “Ihdinas-Siratal-Mustaqim”?
Answer
Wa Alaikumus Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
May Allah grant us beneficial knowledge and guide
us to what is correct.
The ruling on praying behind an imam who makes
mistakes in reciting Surah Al-Fatihah depends on the nature of the mistake,
whether it changes the meaning, and whether the imam is capable of correcting
it.
Surah Al-Fatihah is an essential part of the
prayer, so Muslims should make every reasonable effort to learn and recite it
correctly. However, Islamic rulings also take a person's genuine inability into
account.
1. When a Mistake Changes the Meaning of
Al-Fatihah
If a person makes a serious mistake in reciting
Al-Fatihah that changes the meaning, and he is capable of correcting it but
neglects to do so, the mistake can affect the validity of his prayer.
For example, changing the grammatical form of a
word in a way that changes its meaning may alter the intended message of the
verse. Scholars have discussed examples such as reciting “An'amtu” or “An'amti”
instead of “An'amta” in the phrase “An'amta 'alayhim.”
The original phrase means “those You have
bestowed favour upon.” Changing the vowel can alter the grammatical meaning.
The scholars have therefore emphasised the
importance of learning Al-Fatihah properly, particularly for someone who leads
others in prayer.
However, not every difference in pronunciation
necessarily changes the meaning or invalidates the prayer. The particular word,
the nature of the error, and the person's ability to correct it must be
considered.
2. The Ruling on an Imam Who Can Correct His
Recitation
If an imam is capable of correcting his mistakes
in Al-Fatihah but refuses to learn or continues to neglect correction, he
should not be appointed to lead the congregation when a qualified reciter is
available.
The appropriate response is to advise him
respectfully, help him learn the correct recitation, and involve those
responsible for appointing the mosque's imam if the problem continues.
The objective should be to preserve the
correctness of the prayer while avoiding unnecessary conflict or humiliation.
Scholars have discussed this matter in works
including Rawdat al-Talibin by Imam al-Nawawi and Al-Mughni
by Ibn Qudamah. The Standing Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta and
Shaykh Ibn Baz also addressed mistakes in Al-Fatihah that alter meaning.
3. What If the Imam Is Genuinely Unable to
Correct the Mistake?
A different ruling applies when a person has
genuinely tried to learn the correct pronunciation but remains unable to
produce certain sounds or words correctly.
Allah says:
Arabic:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ
نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
Transliteration:
Lā yukallifullāhu nafsan illā wusʿahā.
English translation:
“Allah does not charge a soul except [with that
within] its capacity.”
— Qur'an 2:286
A person who is genuinely unable to pronounce a
word correctly is not treated in the same way as someone who can correct the
mistake but deliberately refuses to do so.
Scholars have differed over some details
concerning the validity of prayer led by someone who cannot correctly recite
Al-Fatihah despite sincere effort. Some distinguish between the person's own
prayer and his eligibility to lead someone who recites correctly.
Therefore, it is important not to declare every
such person's prayer invalid without examining the circumstances and the
relevant scholarly position.
4. Can People Who Recite Correctly Pray Behind
Such an Imam?
According to a number of scholars, if an imam
makes a mistake in Al-Fatihah that changes the meaning and is able to correct
it but does not, those who can recite Al-Fatihah correctly should not pray
behind him.
However, if the imam is genuinely unable to
correct the mistake despite sincere effort, the ruling is more nuanced, and
scholars have expressed different views.
For this reason, a congregation should not
hastily declare previous prayers invalid or create division in the mosque. The
issue should be referred to a qualified scholar who can assess the actual
recitation, the imam's ability, and the relevant school of jurisprudence.
5. Who Should Be Appointed as an Imam?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon
him) taught that the person most qualified to lead prayer should be selected
according to knowledge and competence in reciting the Book of Allah.
Muslim scholars have explained that an imam
should possess the necessary knowledge of prayer and be able to perform its
essential components correctly.
When appointing an imam, the congregation should
therefore prioritise someone who recites Al-Fatihah correctly and understands
the requirements of prayer. Where a regular imam has a correctable problem, he
should be given appropriate advice and an opportunity to improve.
It is not appropriate for those responsible for
the mosque to ignore a serious, correctable deficiency when a more qualified
person is available.
Conclusion
The main rulings are as follows:
1. A mistake that changes the meaning: It may
affect the validity of the prayer, particularly when the person can correct it
but neglects to do so.
2. A mistake that does not change the meaning: It
does not automatically invalidate the prayer, although correcting the
recitation remains important.
3. A genuine inability to pronounce correctly:
This is treated differently from deliberate negligence, and scholars have
discussed differences in its detailed rulings.
4. Praying behind an imam with a serious error: The
congregation should seek qualified scholarly guidance rather than make hasty
judgments about the validity of individual prayers.
5. Appointing an imam: Priority should be given to
someone who can recite Al-Fatihah correctly and lead the prayer competently.
May Allah grant us correct understanding of His
Book, help us improve our recitation, and unite Muslims upon knowledge, wisdom,
and good manners.
