Dreaming After Salat al-Istikhara: Does It Mean the Man Is the Right One?

QUESTION ❓

Assalamu alaikum. May Allah bless you, Sheikh, and grant you a peaceful day.

I have met a young man who wants to marry me, so I performed Salat al-Istikhara concerning him, following the way taught by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

After completing the prayer, I went back to sleep and dreamed that I had been married to this man. In the dream, I was crying because I was going to be taken to another town.

Then one of our neighbours came and said that he wanted to pray for me because I had jinn and that he would remove them. He kept pulling my little toe until I woke up.

What does this dream mean? Does it have anything to do with the Istikhara I performed?

May Allah reward you.

ANSWER ❗️

Wa alaikumus-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

May Allah guide you to what is best for your religion, your life and your future.

The first and most important point is that Salat al-Istikhara should not be understood as a prayer that must be followed by a dream.

What Is the Purpose of Istikhara?

Kāna Rasūlullāhi ﷺ yuʿallimunā al-istikhārata fil-umūri kullihā kamā yuʿallimunā as-sūrata minal-Qurʾān.

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us Istikhara for all matters just as he used to teach us a surah from the Qur’an.”

Sahih al-Bukhari, 6382

The purpose of Istikhara is to ask Allah to choose what is best and facilitate it for the person, while turning away what is harmful.

The Prophet ﷺ taught a supplication in which the servant asks Allah, in essence, that if the matter is good for his religion, livelihood and ultimate outcome, Allah should decree it, make it easy and bless it; and if it is bad, Allah should turn it away from him and turn him away from it.

Therefore, there is no authentic teaching saying that a person must see a particular dream after Istikhara.

Does Your Dream Mean You Will Marry This Man?

Not necessarily.

Seeing yourself married to someone after performing Istikhara does not establish that you will marry that person or that he is definitely the right husband for you.

It is possible that the dream was influenced by the fact that you were already thinking about the man and had just performed Istikhara concerning marriage to him. Dreams can sometimes reflect matters occupying a person's thoughts and emotions.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that dreams are of different types. Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

الرُّؤْيَا ثَلَاثَةٌ

Ar-ruʾyā thalāthah.

“Dreams are of three types...”

He mentioned the good dream from Allah, the distressing dream from Satan, and what a person tells himself.

Sahih Muslim, 2263

Therefore, a dream immediately following Istikhara should not automatically be treated as a divine answer.

What About Crying Because You Were Being Taken to Another Town?

There is no authentic Islamic rule stating that crying in a marriage dream means the marriage will bring problems, just as there is no established rule that marriage in a dream means an actual marriage is coming.

Your crying could simply reflect an anxiety or concern that already exists within you—for example, fear of leaving your family, moving to another place, or adjusting to a new life after marriage.

But we should not say with certainty that this is what the dream means. Dream interpretation is not a mathematical system in which every symbol has one fixed meaning.

What About the Neighbour Saying You Had Jinn?

This part of the dream should also not be taken as evidence that you actually have jinn or that you are affected by possession.

A person seeing jinn, a healer, an exorcism, or someone claiming to remove jinn in a dream does not establish that such a condition exists in real life.

Likewise, the neighbour pulling your little toe has no known, authentic Islamic interpretation that allows us to conclude that it represents a particular future event or hidden problem.

If the dream frightened you, treat it as a disturbing dream rather than trying to decode every detail.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed that when a person sees something unpleasant in a dream, he should seek refuge in Allah from its evil and from Satan, spit lightly to his left three times, and avoid telling people about the disturbing dream. Sahih al-Bukhari, 6985; Sahih Muslim, 2261.

So How Should You Proceed With the Marriage?

Do not accept or reject the man because of this dream alone.

Instead, investigate the matter in the proper Islamic way.

Consider:

·         his religious commitment and character;

·         how he treats people;

·         his honesty and sense of responsibility;

·         his ability and willingness to fulfil the responsibilities of marriage;

·         compatibility between the two of you;

·         the views of trustworthy family members and people who know him well.

You may also continue making Istikhara and seeking sincere advice from trustworthy people.

Allah says:

وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ

Wa shāwirhum fil-amr, fa-idhā ʿazamta fatawakkal ʿalallāh.

“And consult them in the matter; then when you have decided, put your trust in Allah.”

Qur’an 3:159

If the marriage is good for you, you ask Allah to facilitate it and bless it. If it is harmful, ask Allah to turn it away and grant you something better.

Do Not Let Dreams Create Fear or Suspicion

Most importantly, do not conclude from this dream that you have jinn, that the man is necessarily your destined husband, or that the marriage will certainly bring hardship.

The unseen belongs to Allah alone.

Allah says:

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Qul lā yaʿlamu man fis-samāwāti wal-arḍil-ghayba illallāh.

“Say, ‘None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”

Qur’an 27:65

Therefore, let the dream remain a dream. Put your trust in Allah, investigate the man's character and suitability carefully, consult people you trust, and make your decision based on sound Islamic and practical considerations—not on dream symbols.

If Allah facilitates the marriage in a sound and lawful manner, that is something to consider positively. If the matter becomes unsuitable or harmful, you may step away without feeling that you have disobeyed the message of your Istikhara.
